Never again for anyone.

May the responsible and the complicit face the consequences of their actions. We all know who they are. May the spineless get upright. May the silent ones grow a pair, and join us.

May the war machine implode from within.

May everyone, everywhere gain the right to life, to peace, autonomy and self-determination.

Never again is now.

Nick Rankovic is a software engineer in the streets, fiction writer in the sheets. For Amsterdive, he created the modern tale Doe Normaal.

If you’re a Dutch native, you remember perhaps what *doe normaal* meant for you growing up, and it may or may not still disturb you. It all starts on the other side of the mirror… Find the whole story on the blog, on link in our bio. 🪞

This week Andjela shares her -not so secret - favorite writing/reading spots in Amsterdam!

"At first, I was hesitant about writing this list. I guess a big part of me wanted to keep these places for myself. But the truth is, this piece isn’t really about these specific spots. "

A friend of a friend asks you for your Amsterdam recommendations and you say *of course!* You will put together a list for them.

And then you doubt you even have enough spots to fill a page. And then you postpone. And then you berate yourself for not taking notes of the places you like. And then enough time passes and the friend has already traveled and gone back. And you say “sorry, next time!”
Well, this ALMOST happened to me for the 100th time.

So here are the recs I saved with the friend of my friend! Save them for next time. Save them for yourself or send them to your friend’s friend! These suggestions should be enough to keep them busy for 3/4 days.

Did I miss anything? The comment section is all yours.

Nthabiseng Shongwe is this week’s guest writer on Amsterdive. She told us of Gilbert from tram 7, of almost being run over by a lady on a moped and of birthing a new life like you erect a building - brick by brick - or in this case, chapter by chapter.

If you were at Amsterdive’s blog launch, you were lucky enough to see her perform this piece. If not, the link is in bio. ✨ The team is hoping to bring her back onstage on our next storytelling event. Stay tuned!

This week, Andjela Lekovic shares a love letter with us. Not just any love or any letter, but the story of how she moved to Amsterdam on a whim. And the romance that ensued.

“Beyond the renowned beauty and charm of Amsterdam, there were two main positive cultural shocks that made me want to stay. The first one was an unprecedented sense of safety.“ The second is for you to find out via link in our bio.

“The conversation began with a mix of where are you from and how long have you lived here once she heard my American-leaning accent. A byproduct of international school! I tell her. I come from Venezuela and I’ve been here for ten years. Her eyes widen. She asks me what I do for work, and I don’t know if it is the sunlight over my face or the sunglasses hiding my eyes, but I feel more honest than I have with a stranger in a long time. I tell her I freelance, but that the past year was really tough. I tell her about my unemployment stint, how difficult it felt to find work for a year.

She stops and considers the silence between us, and says: I work with reintegrating people into the job market. I was assigned a project highlighting strangers I meet, asking them about a crossroads in their lives. Do you mind if I interview you? Ask you a few questions?

And in that moment - a very quintessential f**k it I’m in the big city! moment - I tell her, sure!”

Amsterdiver writes about what happens when we talk to strangers. Spoiler: it can be really, really good. Check it out at the link in bio.
