🎃 Halloween with little kids in the Netherlands? We’ve done the searching so you don’t have to.

Finding a Halloween event is one thing. Finding one that’s actually fun for a 3-year-old (and won’t give them nightmares) is another. 👻

We’ve rounded up Halloween parties, spooky discos, pumpkin fun, trick-or-treating and neighbourhood celebrations in Amsterdam, Haarlem and nearby.

A few things worth knowing before you make plans:

👶 Check the age range. Some Halloween events are aimed at older kids, even when they look family-friendly.

🎟️ Book early. Smaller events often have limited spots, and some require advance registration even when they’re free.

🍬 Trick-or-treating works a little differently here. Rather than assuming every street participates, look for organised neighbourhood routes or participating shops.

🕸️ Don’t overlook the smaller local events. Some of the loveliest options are organised by neighbourhood cafés, playgrounds and community centres, not big attractions.

We’ve focused on activities that families with younger children can actually enjoy, with a few options for older siblings too.

Save this guide for October, and send it to the mum who’s already planning the Halloween costumes. 🧡

Now we need your help! 👇

🎃 Have we missed a great Halloween event in your neighbourhood? Tell us in the comments so other mums can find it too.

📍 And where in the Netherlands are you celebrating Halloween this year?

I genuinely thought Dutch childcare meant daycare… or finding a babysitter. 😅

🌍 That’s the thing about raising kids in another country: you don’t know what you don’t know.

You’re making pretty big decisions for your child while also trying to understand a system you didn’t grow up with, in a language that might not be yours.

❤️ Daycare has worked really well for us. But there were other options I didn’t even know to look into when we started.

And honestly, that’s exactly why we wanted to make this series. 🇳🇱

To decode some of the things about parenting in the Netherlands that everyone else seems to already know.

And this is only Part 1. 👀

Next up:

📅 When should you start looking?
🔎 How do you actually get a spot?
💶 And what are you really going to pay?

🔖 Save this if childcare is on your to-do list.

Which childcare option do you use, or are you still figuring it out? And where in the Netherlands are you based? 👇

47% lower risk of preterm birth. 📉

That’s the difference researchers found between women in group prenatal care and women seeing a provider alone.

I discovered this when registering with my local midwife clinic for my second pregnancy.

This form of group prenatal care is called CenteringPregnancy. 🤰 Same check-up, done in a group and then you just... stay and talk. 💬

It started in the US in the 70s and has since spread to various countries around the globe! 🌍 Here in the Netherlands, only ~4 in 10 midwifery practices actually offer it.
Most women never even hear it’s an option.

And here’s the twist: the word “gossip” originally meant exactly this. 👯‍♀️ The women who sat with you through pregnancy, birth, and everything after. It didn’t become an insult until much later.

So maybe the mom group chat isn’t a distraction. Maybe it’s the oldest form of care we have. 🤍

Did you go through your pregnancy alone, or with a group of women who got it? 👇

Becoming a parent in a country you didn’t grow up in means learning a whole new system as you go. 😅🇳🇱

Dutch daycare has definitely been one of those learning curves.

🫠 The cost still feels slightly unhinged
💻 Reliable childcare is SO valuable when you’re both working
👶 Our kids are happy, cared for and genuinely love going
🌍 And without family nearby, having people you trust with your kids means even more

After two kids in Dutch daycare, I can really value what we have and STILL think the cost of childcare here is kind of crazy. 😂

Now I want to compare notes.

💸 Do you feel like your childcare is worth what you pay?

📍Whether you’re in the Netherlands or somewhere else in the world, where are you and what does childcare cost you?

Meet Rachael, our next mama in The NL Mama Files 💛

Rachael is a psychologist and the mama behind MamaSocial - Meet ups made easy, which she took over after having her second baby 👶🏼. Originally from near Liverpool 🇬🇧, Rachael has called Amsterdam home for 7 years and is now raising two little boys here with her Irish husband (and their Dutch dog, Ted 🐶).

What we loved about Rachael’s answers is how much they capture that strange transition into motherhood — when your world suddenly changes, your confidence can take a hit, and somehow you’re also supposed to go out and make new friends while running on almost no sleep 😴🥹

But sometimes, putting yourself out there is exactly how you find the people who make this new version of life feel a little more like yours. 🫶

And Rachael also gave us one of our favourite answers to date:

“Our eldest isn’t a sleeper. I am.” 😂

Thank you Rachael for sharing your experience with us. 💛

My 3-year-old ended up in a Dutch ER, and here are 5 things I took away from it as a South African 🇿🇦 mom living in the Netherlands 🇳🇱 :

👩‍⚕️ Trust yourself enough to speak up. They couldn’t see what I could see over the phone. When I knew something wasn’t right, I called back, and I’m very glad I did.

🩺 “Doing less” doesn’t necessarily mean caring less.
No unnecessary blood tests or investigations just to rule out every possibility. If the result wasn’t going to change her treatment, they didn’t put her through it.

🔎 They gathered information before intervening. Lots of questions, lots of observation, watching how she responded to treatment, then adjusting when they needed to.

💛 My child was actually treated like the patient.
They spoke to HER, explained what they were doing and took their time with her. She mostly refused to speak back, obviously. 😂

💸 And after two days in hospital… we just left. No bill. Not a single euro to pay on the way out. As someone who grew up with private healthcare in South Africa, this will never not feel wild to me.

10 years here and I’m still learning how differently healthcare can work depending on where you come from.

Now I KNOW people have opinions on this one 👀

Has the Dutch approach to healthcare grown on you, or are you still fighting your huisarts every step of the way? 😂

And where did you move here from? How does the healthcare culture there compare?
