GreyNet International Award Recipient 2025 🏆
Brian Paul Bales is currently the Coordinator of the International Nuclear Information System (INIS) at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, Austria. In this role, he leads one of the world’s most comprehensive repositories of literature on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, ensuring access to grey and conventional literature across 132 INIS Member States and the world. Bales began his career in public safety IT, working as a programmer for emergency services in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In 2008, he joined the IAEA as a Systems Administrator, serving later as Library Systems Analyst and finally as Acting Group Leader of the Systems Development and Support Group. In 2015, he joined the United Nations’ International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals in Arusha, Tanzania. There, he helped to establish digital archives for both the Rwanda and Yugoslavia tribunals, ensuring the long-term preservation of international judicial records. He returned to the IAEA in 2018 for his current role as INIS Coordinator. His professional interests include digital preservation, open access, scientific repositories, and the application of AI to information workflows. He holds a Master’s Degree in Information Technology from the University of Denver and is an advocate for the responsible integration of emerging technologies in information management. Brian’s involvement with GreyNet International over the past five years as a conference delegate, author, and Associate member on behalf of INIS-IAEA has made a significant contribution to our organization’s work in the field of grey literature.
