Samurette: “A Not So Funny Story”, is the female counterpart of Samurai. She is a character from the martial arts -traditionally a world of mainly male heroes- and the alter ego of visual artist and karate teacher Thérèse Zoekende.

“Samurette’s Portrait Gallery of the Association of Revenge Friends” (2025) is an installation of five hoodies in different colors, hung in a row, freely hanging in space. The clothing features portraits and texts of Samurette’s vengeful girlfriends on the front and back. the Association of Revenge Friends has five members: Beatrix Kiddo, Lady Snowblood, Lilith, Pirate Jenny and Samurette. All Badass Women who resolve the still existing taboo and fear of the powerful, rebellious and violent woman.

The Women House Amsterdam exhibition also includes Samurette’s first graphic novel: “Samurette in the Castle Garden”. Paperback, Dutch, 60 pages, suitable for ages 12 and up, 2021. The graphic novel tells, among other things, about Samurette’s entanglement with the character Eddy. “Eduardo wanders through the Castle Garden again, watched by Samurette: He was supposed to go home, wasn’t he?”

Seeräuber Jenny/Pirate Jenny: “Hoppla” is a character in the Threepenny Opera (1928) by Kurt Weill, with a text by Bertolt Brecht, originally performed by singer and actress Lotte Lenya (Vienna 1898 - NY 1981). The figure of Jenny is borrowed from John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, who in turn based the character on the historical person of Jenny Diver (1700-1741).

“HOPLA” says Jenny as the umpteenth head rolls of one of the inhabitants of the port city. They were all beheaded by the pirates of the ship with eight sails and fifty cannons, exept Jenny. Everyting has been razed tot he ground by cannon fire, only the Tatty Hotel and Jenny are still standing. After the massacre Jenny runs away with the pirates. This is the revenge fantasy of maid Jenny. She makes the beds, does the dishes, serves the guests and all the while feels seriously undervalued. She suffers from feelings of meaninglessness and powerlessness: ‘Do you actually know who I am?! She would so love to have the power to make those arrogant jerks a head shorter and then be freed by tough pirates from that rotten place where she now spends her days and hours -and who knows, maybe the rest of her life.

Lady Snowblood: “Who are you?’ “Vengeance” is the heroine of the Japanes manga series (1972-1973) of the same name written by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Kazuo Kamimura.
Two Lady Snowblood films were made: Shurayuki-hime (Lady Snowblood) in 1973, and Shurayuki-hime: Urami renga aka Lady Snowblood: Love Song of Vengeance in 1974. The films are directed by Toshiya Fujita. Actress en singer Meiko Kaji plays lady Snowblood. The Lady Snowblood-films were a major source of inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill diptych. He copied the opening music and entire scenes from it.

“I’ve immersed my body in the river of vengeance and thrown away my womanhood many moons ago.” Yuki was born in a women’s prison. It’s snowing outside, her mother gives her the name Yuki which means ‘happiness’ and ‘snow’ or ‘snow flower’ or ‘snow princess’. Her mother dies shortly after her birth.
Mother was in prison for murder. The victim was one of four criminals who murdered her husband and son in front of her and r***d her. In her final words to her baby Yuki, she utters an incantation calling for avenging the last three men. Yuki undergoes rigorous sword traing with a priests and becomes her mother’s avenging angel.

According to film critic Howard Hampton it’s Kaji’s gaze that turns Yuki into a character who haunts the audience’s dreams and nightmares. “Kaji’s performances in the LADY SNOWBLOOD films are pervasively, rapturously iconic. (…) Her eyes were her most unforgettable feature: a penetrating stare that was sharper than a swordsman’s blade or a serpent’s tooth. She made the female gaze deadlier than the male’s.”

Lilith: “We Are Equal”
God created woman twice. Lilith was first, Eve second.
In Genesis 1 he created  Lilith “Male and female He created them”. In this version, man and woman are created together and appear to be equal.
in Genesis 2 Adam is created first, followed by plants, then animals and finally Eve. She comes last and is created from Adam’s rib.

Lilith left the Garden of Eden due to her refusal to be subservient to Adam. She believed in their equality, having both been created from the earth. After disagreeing with Adam, Lilith fled to gain her independence. Lilith’s story is often associated with themes of female autonomy and defiance against patriarchal structures.

Dante Gabriel Rossetti (London, 1828 - Kent, 1882) painted “Lady Lilith”. The painting shows Lilith, Adam’s first wife, combing her luxuriant hair.
In 1868 Rossetti painted a pendant to the work: “Sybilla Palmifera”. He wrote a matching sonnet for both paintings. Rossetti emphasized the contrasts between the two women who represented respectively the sibyl and the siren. Lilth comes out as the Bad Girl: beautiful, but evil.
In the twentieth century, Lady Lilith was interpreted by art critics as an expression of the Victorian fear of the emancipated woman. Lilith, who did not wish to submit to Adam, is seen as the first advocate of women’s rights.

Q: What has changed after more than 50 years of feminism in the arts.

In the 21st century, feminist art continues to assert itself as a powerful, polyphonic language of resistance, critique, and poetic disruption. WOMEN HOUSE AMSTERDAM celebrates the power of feminist artistic expression while critically examining the position of women artists by confronting gender inequality and the persistent exclusions that continue to shape the art world.

The WOMEN HOUSE project began in 2024 in Brazil under the title Casa de Mulheres, at the Museum of Modern Art of Bahia (MAM-BA). Now in its second edition, the exhibition travels from Salvador da Bahia to Amsterdam, bringing together 25 international artists from diverse backgrounds.

The project pays tribute to Womanhouse (1972), the first feminist art exhibition, created by artists Judy Chicago and Miriam Schapiro in Los Angeles, USA.

SAMURETTE

We weten daardoor weinig over haar.
