On January 1, 1974, I was in, or near, in a farmhouse, Oslo, Norway, on tour with The New Life Show, 10 people from 12 countries, an initiative of the Unified Family / Unification Church, labelled the Moonies by the media.
I heard a lovely traditional Norwegian song, Deilig er Jorden (Delicious /Wonderful is the Earth) - https://lyricstranslate.com/en/deilig-er-jorden-delicious-earth.html - sung by one of our group, Elfrid Langenes, and found a translation and adapted it, with the title God’s Day song. In those days, we Moonies celebrated New Year’s Day as God’s Day, to give Him the honour and to pledge to dedicate ourselves to Kingdom building throughout the year.
Today, much has changed. Moonies, now often claiming the title Unificationist, no longer celebrate January 1 in this way, but have a smaller celebration, in the West, at the beginning of the Chinese New Year. I myself am no longer active with any of the organizational activities, but my life is and views are still influenced by those days.
I might rephrase the text to express more truly my views now, not least that the sacred is limited if expressed merely as a masculine entity intent on creating a kingdom. But this is how I wrote and sang it back in 1974.
How beautiful is God’s good earth, my heart sings with the joy of birth, sings with the cosmos on this new day;
from every nation, comes the proclamation: today is God’s own day.
As the years do come and go, the kingdom of our God will grow, till in his family all are one;
united in one heart, never more to be apart, the victory of God is won.
Father’s hopes are on us all, we stand erect and hear his call; Father, we pledge our live today.
You need have no more fear, we will fulfil your will this year, the earth shakes as we shout Mansei.
+ Note: Mansei/mansay/manse: Korean, from Chinese: 10,000 years, long life, here meaning Victory! = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_thousand_years
