"In this documentary, the makers highlight the right to the city for the residents of the Baaibuurt in Amsterdam West. The โ€˜right to the cityโ€™ is a concept that goes beyond mere access to urban spaces; it revolves around the collective power to shape the city and determine how it develops. The term โ€˜right to the cityโ€™ was originally introduced by the French philosopher and sociologist Henri Lefebvre in 1968, and expresses the idea that urban space should not only serve capital or private property, but must be shaped by and for the people who live there, especially marginalized communities. It encompasses rights such as access to housing, public services, transport, culture, education, and green space; participation in decision-making on urban planning and governance; inclusion in the cultural, social, and political life of the city; and influence over urban change (such as resisting displacement, gentrification, and the privatization of public space). These rights were (almost) entirely absent for the residents of Baaibuurt-West."
