Flat i Flat i is an occasional publishing house for publications that concentrate on the creative process behind one single artwork.

Flat i was founded in 2015 as a home gallery, but over time, and after moving to Brussels, has turned into a publishing project more than anything else. Flat i publications concentrate on the creative process behind one single work, focusing on the material that gets translated and the actions that perform this translation rather than the work that these combined efforts result in. Flat i publicat

ions aim to not just share this material and this process, but to find ways to reenact them, as a way of freeing them from being merely that which leads to the final work; to find ways to have this process exist on its own terms and speak for itself. Flat i is a project by Michiel Huijben.

The Stuart Sherman Papers contains a wide variety of texts, from poems and short stories to single-sentence musings and word play. To offer the reader some guidance, they’re divided into loose categories which function as chapters. One of these is simply titled PEOPLE, and contains wonderful short stories about significant people in Stuart’s life, like this one about the actor, director and playwright Charles Ludlam.

Charles Ludlam was born on Long Island, New York, in 1943 and moved to Manhattan in 1964 after obtaining a degree in dramatic literature from Hofstra University. His work fused elements of camp, farce, and absurdist theater, often satirizing social norms, gender, and identity with flamboyant and exaggerated characters. A groundbreaking figure in LGBTQ+ theater, Ludlam’s boundary-pushing style and exuberant presence made him a fixture in Midtown Manhattan’s Off- (and Off-Off) Broadway scene until his death from AIDS in 1987.

Stuart’s story, aptly titled CHARLES LUDLAM, is a beautiful character description of Ludlam, an ode to a friend, disguised as a short story that describes how the two met – offering a glimpse of Midtown Manhattan’s theatre/performance scene of the ‘70s and ‘80s in the process.

Pre-order The Stuart Sherman Papers now via welcometoflati.bigcartel.com and receive a discount and three limited edition reprints of an original greetings card by Stuart Sherman. This offer lasts only one more week!

BENCH, VOL. I
By Monika Janulevičiūtė

Co-published by Flat i and buddies

This first volume of Janulevičiūtė’s BENCH contains 378 screenshots of benches found in real estate listings – from summer houses, homesteads, barns, garden houses, timber sheds to wash houses and saunas – in provinces and towns of Lithuania. It’s as if life was removed quite recently, or not at all – the soup is still warm, life is retained as it is, with benches in the margins. Bags, tools, blankets, apples, snow – the daily clutter of life – are found undisturbed.

Our Story

Flat i is an independent publishing project by Michiel Huijben, intended to produce publications which focus on the research and process behind a single work of art; on the material that gets translated and the actions that perform this translation, rather than the work that these combined efforts result in.

The aim is to not just share this material and process, but to find ways to reenact them, as a way of freeing them from being merely that which leads to the final work -- ultimately the aim is to find ways to have this process exist on its own terms and speak for itself.

Essentially, Flat i provides me with opportunities for working closely with artists whose work and working methods i find inspiring, and to share these with others.

Flat i is run by me, Michiel.
