Dear friends,
With summer in full swing, we thought this would be a good moment to briefly explain the heart of our campaign.
On 1 October 2027, Het Groene Veld is scheduled for a major redevelopment. Under the current plans adopted by the City of Amsterdam, the site must accommodate three functions: utilities, sports and Free Space.
But something essential is missing.
The area's fourth function- nature- is barely taken into account and has no voice at the table. Yet it is precisely the interaction between nature, culture, community and imagination that makes Het Groene Veld what it is: one of Amsterdam's last great free cultural spaces.
Under the current plans, utilities and sports will receive almost all the space they require. Free Space, on the other hand, is expected to give up around 70% of the land it currently uses. As a result, festivals, cultural programmes and places for people to meet will disappear, sixty residents will lose their homes, and a significant part of the area's ecological structure will be destroyed. At the same time, there will still not be enough room to accommodate the full rugby facilities the municipality itself wants to build.
We believe there is a better way.
Not by forcing these functions to compete with one another, but by creating a future in which nature, culture, community and imagination continue to strengthen each other.
That is why we are campaigning for a fairer, more balanced and future-proof redevelopment of the area.
