Camilla Vickerage, PENTATONE’s Sales & Communications Manager, shares her thoughts on Brahms/Koncz – Sonatas for Clarinet and Orchestra for this month’s Personal Pick!
“If you’re a fan of Brahms or just in the mood for something lush, lyrical, and beautifully played, I can’t recommend this album enough. Phenomenal clarinetist Daniel Ottensamer, teams up with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and childhood friend and conductor Stephan Koncz to give Brahms’ late clarinet sonatas a fresh twist—reimagined with full orchestral accompaniment by Koncz.
It works so well, the orchestration feels natural, never overwhelming the clarinet, and Daniel Ottensamer’s playing is just stunning - warm, expressive and full of nuance.
There’s a real sense of dialogue between soloist, conductor and orchestra, you can tell that Daniel and Stephan have not only both known each other for years but also played together, which adds another dimension to these intimate works. This album also includes a bonus addition of Walter Rabls’ Quartet for Piano, Clarinet, Violin & Cello in E-Flat Major, Op. 1 where Ottensamer is joined by pianist Christoph Traxler and Berlin Philharmonic’s first concertmaster Noah Bendix-Balgley, while Koncz changes his baton for the cello. It is these extra details and twists that add an additional layer of sparkle to this recording.
The artwork deserves special mention too, it’s got this fun, painterly energy that jumps right out at you!”
