Orenda Records Visionary Creative Music
www.orendarecords.com "Orenda Records is a small Southern California label that punches above its weight.

Run by Daniel Rosenboom, its recordings document the creation of a new sound and scene. Call it “Los Angeles Creative Music” if you will. Orenda’s offerings are informed by rock, modern classical, and jazz, and combine these genres in a natural, organic fashion. These are not jazz musicians who dabble in classical or vice-versa. Instead, Orenda’s musicians grew up in a post-Braxton era where musical styles are viewed on a continuum rather than as individual silos of expression."

VOLUNTARY BREATH
by Jon Armstrong, Nell Flanders & the Idaho State-Civic Orchestra
Coming October 2nd, 2026

Orenda Records is thrilled to announce the pre-order for saxophonist/composer Jon Armstrong's newest opus, "Voluntary Breath," a 30-minute concerto for saxophone and orchestra performed with the Idaho State-Civic Orchestra under the baton of Nell Flanders. Jon Armstrong has developed a reputation as a daring composer/performer throughout his career, releasing three critically acclaimed albums on Orenda Records as a band leader. “Voluntary Breath” is a ground-breaking work, incorporating music healing, world music, meditation, jazz, classical music. The piece was inspired by the soundscapes of hospital rooms where his premature son spent his first nine months of life.

Orenda Records is proud to co-release “Voluntary Breath” with City Creek Records, a record label run by the commercial music program Jon Armstrong directs at Idaho State University. As always, we thank you so much for your continued support, and we hope you love this music as much as we do!

OUT TODAY!
Max Kutner // Rogue Lash

NYC-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Max Kutner returns with a sonic behemoth of a project entitled "Rogue Lash" on Orenda Records. The album exhibits a post-genre modernist sensibility rooted in ritualized repetition and abstract expressionism. Kutner treats sound as an evolving process or environment, rather than as a set of discrete songs. He uses repetition and groove as hypnotic or structural mechanisms emerging from a grand collage of funk, industrial, metal, and drone. Additionally, the music exhibits a meta-layer of socio-philosophical dimension based on Kutner’s satirized impressions of people, places and assorted phenomena while living in New York City.

The album was conceived during an extended hiatus from performance. While initially envisioned as a project for large chamber ensemble, Kutner shifted towards a “single-man” big band approach, working from home using extensive sample libraries, guitars, basses, keyboards and drum machines, and also remotely recording over a dozen different musicians in New York City, Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, and Boston. One aspect in particular that separates this project from Kutner’s other albums is that Kutner mixed and mastered the entire set himself for the first time and entirely from his own home. Each of the ten tracks on Rogue Lash is a tiny world of sound unto itself that draws inspiration from classic industrial (SPK, Art of Noise, Nine Nails), progressive rock (Frank Zappa, Magma, King Crimson), IDM (Aphex Twin, Autechre), post rock (Tortoise, Slint), drone metal (sunn0))), Abruptum), and experimental hiphop (Clipping, MF Doom, Death Grips). Unfettered by the limitations of traditional recording scenarios dealing with studios, scheduling engineers and musicians, and limited equipment and also working without strict deadlines, Kutner was able to reach a new height of realizing his artistic visions. It is the purest expression of his thoughts.

We are thrilled to announce the pre-order for composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Max Kutner's upcoming album "Rogue Lash," out Feb 27 on Orenda Records.

This album’s post-genre modernist sensibility is rooted in ritualized repetition and abstract expressionism, and draws inspiration from classic industrial, progressive rock, IDM, post rock, drone metal, and experimental hiphop. Rogue Lash exhibits a meta-layer of socio-philosophical dimension based on Kutner’s satirized impressions of people, places and assorted phenomena while living in New York City.

For Rogue Lash, Kutner self-produced extensive libraries of guitars, basses, keyboards and drum machines, and recorded over a dozen musicians in New York City, Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, and Boston. Each track on Rogue Lash is a sound world unto itself, with sharp, sardonic gestures reflected in their titles, like “Navigating the Nepomatrix” and “Stardust Apes.”
