What if I told you the greatest fantasy trilogy ever written was dropped in 1320?

Dante’s The Divine Comedy: the blueprint for everything dark and epic:

👹 Inferno = creepy horror/dark fantasy vibes. A guided tour through Hell where every circle is basically a different boss level. (Fire, ice, betrayal, he’s got it all.)
⛰️ Purgatorio = the ultimate training arc. Climbing a mountain while battling regrets and leveling up your soul.
🌌 Paradiso = pure cosmic fantasy. Think glowing light realms, angelic NPCs, and the final boss = God.

And the best part? Dante literally self-inserted himself as the MC, traveling with his favorite poet (Virgil = mentor figure) and the love of his life (Beatrice = dream girl, spiritual guide). It’s fanfiction energy but sacred.

Why read it today?
✅ If you love dark fantasy, this is the original
✅ It’s dramatic, emotional, and weirdly bingeable
✅You’ll see echoes of it in everything from Sandman to Good Omens to Dark Souls

⚠️ Content warning: Religious trauma, eternal damnation, but also some of the most gorgeous poetry ever written.

So yeah, The Divine Comedy walked so every dark fantasy you love could run. 🖤 and I got the pretty copy, finally.

“Three women. One soil. All of them grow teeth.”

Just finished Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V.E. Schwab and… wow. If you thought vampire stories were predictable, think again. Schwab weaves centuries of blood, hunger, and grief into a tapestry that is as elegant as it is terrifying.

Why you absolutely should read this:
✅ Sweeping across three eras, the way history bleeds forward is haunting and immersive.
✅ Q***r vampire mythos done in a deeply emotional, messy, and unapologetic way.
✅ It’s not just about living forever, it’s about what you become when your past never lets you rest.
✅ Gorgeous writing. Dark beauty. And yes, chills.

📚 Released June 10, 2025, I’m already marking this down as one of my most anticipated reads.

“Evil never comes from one place. It grows in shadows, whispers, ambition.”

Just finished The Dark Powers of Tolkien by David Day, a deep dive into Tolkien’s darkest beings, from Morgoth to Sauron, orcs to corrupted spirits. This illustrated guide doesn’t just show the evil, it traces it back through myth, history, and Tolkien’s own storytelling.

Why you should read it:
✅ Because evil isn’t just one villain, it’s a tapestry of choices, corruption, and power gone wrong
✅ The artwork, timelines, creature lineages make Middle-earth’s darkness feel almost alive.
✅ For fans who want more than the story, they want the lore, the history, the “why” behind the shadows

⚠️ Just a heads-up: it’s unofficial. Some parts are David Day’s interpretations, definitely cool for Tolkien nerds, maybe confusing for new readers.

⚠️ Spoiler alert (plots & twists inside!)

“Symbology, manuscripts, and the question: What if consciousness is more than just a product of the brain?”

Robert Langdon returns in this newest thriller by Dan Brown. It starts in Prague, where his partner, noetic scientist Katherine Solomon, disappears, along with her groundbreaking manuscript. Langdon must chase clues through ancient folklore, modern science, and hidden secret societies to find her.

Why you should read it:
❤️ It combines science + mysticism: Brown explores consciousness, folklore, and philosophy in a fast-paced plot.
❤️ If you love globe-trotting puzzles (like in Da Vinci Code) with high stakes, this one delivers.
❤️ The setting is atmosphere-rich: Prague, graveyards, secret paths, underground passages, ancient lore.
❤️ It pushes you to think: what if some “truths” we believe are about to be rewritten? What are we willing to risk in the name of discovery?

Favourite line: “A city which successfully kept its secrets for centuries and will not readily deliver them.”

⚠️ Spoiler Alert: If you’ve only read Riftborne, there are major revelations in Duskbound that upend everything you thought you knew.

"When you thought the shadows were your enemy, you discover they might be your only chance.”

Duskbound (Esprithean Trilogy #2) picks up where Riftborne left off, Fia Riftborne, once branded an outcast, is now a prisoner in Ravenfell, in the enemy realm of Umbrathia. But these “monsters” she was taught to fear aren’t what they seem. When she uncovers the truth about war, power, and the magic she wields, everything changes.

Why you should read it:
🌑 Shadow-wielding + mind manipulation power that shakes the foundations of both realms.
⚔️ Complex moral ambiguity, not every side is clean or wholly good. Fia is forced to question everything she believed.
💔 Relationships that are messy, passionate, with tension you can cut with a knife. Fia + Aether. Laryk’s betrayals. The found family in all its love & hurt.
🌍 World-building taken up several levels: the conflict between Sídhe and Umbrathia, the resource theft of “essence,” the Void trials, political intrigue … it’s rich and immersive.

“To stand in darkness is easy. To stand for it… that’s the hard part.”

In Riftborne, she’s forced into a deadly choice: fight for the city that cast her aside, or embrace the darkness she was born to wield.

When General Laryk Ashford gives her an ultimatum, everything shifts, alliances blur, enemies burn, and the fate of the Isle hangs in the balance.

The OG toxic romance?

Before there was 50 shades of grey, Fourth Wing, ACOTAR, or any of today’s dark romance/s**t obsessions, there was Heathcliff and Catherine.
And trust me… Emily Brontë walked so your favorite morally-gray book boyfriends could run.

Wuthering Heights isn’t sweet or fluffy, it’s obsession, betrayal, jealousy, and passion turned destructive. Heathcliff and Catherine don’t just fall in love, they consume each other, and everyone around them gets burned in the process.

Why you should read it even now:
⚡ The intensity of a dark romance with 19th-century gothic drama
💔 A messy, destructive love story that feels as addictive as modern s**t (but way more tragic)
🌫️ The moody Yorkshire moors: peak dark-academia vibes
📖 Proof that toxic, morally gray love stories are nothing new, they just wore corsets back then

“Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”
…yeah, tell me that doesn’t sound like it belongs in a spicy TikTok edit 👀

“By midnight, she had begun a civil war… with dragons.”

Step into an alternate 1923 London where dragons soar above protest-filled streets, and one daring girl, Vivien Featherswallow, risks everything. Her plan? A simple summer internship translating dragon languages. Instead? She ignites revolution, unravels government secrets at Bletchley Park, and holds the peace between humans and dragons in her hands.

Why You Should Read It:
✅ Dark Academia Meets Fantasy: A historical YA fantasy debut with all the moody mystique of Babel and Fourth Wing.
✅ Linguistics + Codebreaking + Dragons: Vivien’s translation skills land her in an unexpected position, deciphering hidden dragon codes to save her family and the fragile truce.
✅ Epic Scope, Smart Leads: S.F. Williamson delivers intelligent political intrigue, a slow-burn romance, and moral complexity in every twist.

“In a world built on silence, truth is the deadliest language.”

Reading The Depths of Vanalf felt like stepping into a story that blends the dark, monster-slaying grit of The Witcher with the epic fellowship of The Lord of the Rings.

What truly drew me in were the four main characters, each with specialized powers that felt so deeply tied to who they were:

⚔️ Bjorn → reminded me of Geralt of Rivia: brooding, strong, and the protector who faces monsters so others can keep going.
🪽 Hallik → like Samwise Gamgee with wings: loyal, grounded, and the heart of the group.
📚 Elowyn → had Hermione Granger’s sharp mind: resourceful, level-headed, and steadying the chaos.
🗡️ Lorelai → gave me Manon Blackbeak vibes: fierce, unapologetic, and unforgettable.

🌟 Why it worked for me:
The powers weren’t just “magic”, they reflected the characters’ identities, giving weight to their struggles and triumphs. The worldbuilding carried that Witcher-esque grit monsters, moral grays, and high stakes with every step. And yet, the bond of these four echoed the soul of the Fellowship: loyalty, sacrifice, and strength in unity.

✨ Final Thoughts:
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5/5)
My new favorite. A perfect blend of dark danger and epic camaraderie, a story of power, sacrifice, and the bonds that form when unlikely heroes stand together.

“An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.”

Babel by R.F. Kuang is a dark academia masterpiece—a story of language, colonialism, rebellion, and the cost of power.
Set in an alternate 1830s Oxford, it follows Robin Swift, a Chinese orphan raised to serve the British Empire through the magical art of translation.

But the deeper he goes into Babel—the royal translation institute—the more he sees the truth:
Words can build empires… or break them.

Read it if you love:
— dark academia with real stakes
— linguistic magic + colonial critique
— morally complex characters
— stories that challenge power and privilege

This isn’t just a fantasy. It’s a revolution in disguise.

🦇 “Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make.”

Dracula isn’t just a vampire story, it’s the blueprint for them all.
Bram Stoker’s 1897 gothic masterpiece blends fear, superstition, and modernity in a chilling tale of Count Dracula’s attempt to spread his dark influence from Transylvania to England and the band of unlikely heroes determined to stop him.

✨ This is honestly one of my all-time favorite books. Every reread reminds me why it’s a timeless gothic masterpiece.

Why you should read it (or reread it):
🩸 The original vampire novel that inspired a whole genre
🌑 Dripping with gothic atmosphere: castles, fog, crypts, and dread
📖 Told through diaries, letters, and news clippings (like the OG found-footage style)
💔 A battle of faith, science, love, and fear that still feels eerily modern

If you love gothic vibes, dark-academia aesthetics, or just want to see where vampire lore began—Dracula still bites.

“Not all of us are meant to climb. Some of us must descend.”

In Katabasis, R.F. Kuang reimagines the ancient mythic trope of a hero’s descent into the underworld through the claustrophobic and cutthroat corridors of Cambridge academia. Graduate student Alice Law, obsessed and driven, makes a fateful decision to venture into Hell, not for glory, but to retrieve her advisor’s soul for a recommendation that could define her future. But she’s not alone: her rival Peter Murdoch is on the same dangerous path, and their rivalry becomes a fragile alliance amid guilt, ambition, and existential dread.

Why you should read it:
✅ Dante’s Inferno meets Piranesi in a novel suffused with myth, psychological horror, and academic satire.
✅ A ruthless and unflinching critique of academic obsession, where notebooks and chalk feel as weighty as chains.
✅ Kuang’s writing is richly philosophical, haunted by literary homage, ethical tension, and emotional reckoning

The novel’s title, Katabasis, literally signifies a “descent into the underworld”, echoing archetypes from Homer to Virgil to Dante, but repurposed for the symbolic and very literal, hellscape of academia.

“You do not return from Hell unchanged. The question is what part of you stays behind?”
