How do you measure the activity of single catalyst particles in a multiphase system? This is a challenging question that researchers from the University of Twente and Utrecht University have tackled by combining droplet-based microfluidics and optical detection in a novel microreactor system.

The researchers synthesized hollow Pd/SiO2 catalyst microparticles and encapsulated them in tiny droplets of liquid. These droplets were then exposed to a gas reactant (hydrogen) through a thin membrane. By monitoring the color change in the droplets, the researchers could visualize the hydrogenation activity of each catalyst particle in a high-throughput fashion.

This innovative approach allows for the screening of single catalyst particles in a realistic multiphase environment, which can reveal important new possibilities for single catalyst particle diagnostics.

This work is a great example of how science communication can be enhanced by visualization. By using simple and elegant methods, the researchers were able to show the beauty and complexity of catalysis in a way that is accessible and engaging for a broad audience.
