Hexagraf is a Dutch duo (members of the Zwotte Kring circle) who joined forces to create harrowing and haunting fusions of doom and black metal, thematically focused on the desolation wrought by modern industry. 𝑵𝒚𝒓𝒂𝒌 - 𝑷𝒉𝒐𝒆𝒏𝒊𝒙 𝑴𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔 (2025)

Nyrak is a solo project from mastermind Nevel who is the guitar player and songwriter behind Gotmoor. With Gotmoor they made two fantastic raw black metal demo’s which in my opinion are one of the best demo’s from the late nineties. Many years later they released “Zonderlingen” which seems like a new era had arrived for Gotmoor but alas the silence is pretty much deafening the last couple of years.

In 2021 Nevel founded Nyrak with the help of session musicians and released two full-length albums and an EP. Phoenix Mortis is the third full-length album and will be released by Void Wanderer Productions. VWP is an underground label with a very interesting roster which overall leans towards the more atmospheric part of underground black metal without falling in the trap of releasing overly bombastic symphonic crap.

Nyrak describes their music as progressive black metal but I tend to disagree. There are some light atmospheric and symphonic touches here and there but overall it’s pretty straightforward. The riffs in combination with the orchestration sets the mood and the drums gives every song a brutal flavor to them. Quite a big chunk of the duration contains blast-beats and some swinging drum-parts that reminded me of Primordial. The very young drummer Bram Veldeman is a goddamn beast so keep an eye on him!

The vocals seems to get more intense with every song. On the amazing Phoenix Mortis trilogy all the qualities of each band member comes together as a 20 minute masterpiece of pure majestic brutality.

The production is very professionally done and might scare of some underground black metal cellar dwellers who only listen to sh*tty recordings. To be clear the sound is professionally done but not sterile in any way. Phoenix Mortis is highly recommended if you are a more adventurous listener of underground black metal.
