This time last week was the prize giving for the 34th Holland koi show at its new venue at Bloemenpark Appeltern.
This was my eighth visit to the Holland show in the past 15 years and it was as well organised and run as always, with a great core team of dedicated volunteers who make it all possible. Last year I was able to work in the show doing benching, netting for the judges, steering the IPads and had a chance to take part in a ZNA training seminar.
This year I was able to have the excellent opportunity to be an official trainee for the show as a third year KJUKO trainee. The Holland koi show is a ZNA show run by the NVN. This means the benching and judging is slightly different to the UK shows. There are differing classes where the doitsu fish are separated out and there are more prizes for non gosanke than in a UK show. On the whole though it is very familiar.
For the judging I was able to follow the team led by Mike Harvey from South Africa, a ZNA certified judge, our own Carol McCall from KJUKO and Rudi Vanden Broeck a local certified ZNA judge from Belgium.
It was interesting to compare the judging methodology of the ZNA judges, the differences, but mainly the overwhelming similarities and how similar the opinions were on the day.
I can only echo the comments about how friendly everyone is at the show and it really should be on everyone’s list to visit. The volunteers make it all happen, and in the crazy heat!
On the Sunday, I was even given the opportunity to present the prize for the best in special variety Hikari Utsuri award for a very unique tancho kin Showa.
I hope they will have me back in the future and that trainees from both countries get the chance to take part in each others shows in the coming years, it is a very useful and enjoyable experience.
Next up for me is the Great British Koi Show next weekend
