Doug MacLeod (1946) is een Amerikaanse bluesmuzikant. Hoewel hij nu woont in Memphis, heeft hij gewoond en gewerkt in North Carolina, St. Louis, New York, Los Angeles, en Norfolk, Virginia, waar hij gestationeerd was bij de marine van de Verenigde Staten. Hij maakte in zijn tienerjaren kennis met de blues in St. Louis en begon zijn carrière met het spelen van country blues op akoestische gitaar, en ontdekte dat zingen een chronische hapering verlichtte en hem hielp om het uiteindelijk te overwinnen. Hoewel voornamelijk geassocieerd met akoestische gitaar, werden zijn vaardigheden ontwikkeld als een bluesbassist en aangescherpt door zijn latere reizen naar jazz en elektrische blues.

De bluesinstructie van MacLeod wordt toegeschreven aan een man die hij kende als Ernest Banks die hem ook de leidende principes van zijn muziek en uitvoeringen gaf : “Speel nooit een noot die je niet gelooft” en “Schrijf of zing nooit over wat je niet weet”. Hij vormde ook een sterke vriendschap met George “Harmonica” Smith, die niet alleen zijn mentor werd, maar ook de bron of ervaring voor veel van zijn liedjes en verhalen in zijn live-uitvoeringen. MacLeod speelt alleen zijn eigen composities en zijn muziek is opgenomen door vele andere artiesten, waaronder Albert Collins, P*e Wee Crayton, Albert King, Chris Thomas King, Coco Montoya, Son Seals, Tabby Thomas en Joe Louis Walker.

Doug is een meervoudige Blues Music Award-winnaar, waaronder de Blues Music Award voor Acoustic Artist Of The Year in 2023 en de Blues Music Award voor Acoustic Album Of The Year in 2018 Break The Chain. In 2023 won hij de Blues Music Award voor Acoustic Artist Of The Year. In 2024 werd hij genomineerd voor twee Blues Music Awards. Acoustic Artist Of The Year en Acoustic Album Of The Year voor het album Raw Blues 1. Raw Blues 2 werd uitgebracht in april 2024. In 2022 werd A Soul To Claim uitgeroepen tot Downbeat Magazine Album Of The Year.
In meer dan 40 jaar, 27 studioalbums, verschillende live-opnames, compilaties, twee instructie-dvd’s voor bluesgitaar en een dvd met liveoptredens zet hij de traditie van de verhalende bluesman voort. Doug perfectioneerde zijn vakmanschap door te spelen met bluesgiganten als George “Harmonica” Smith, Big Joe Turner, P*e Wee Crayton, Eddie ‘Cleanhead’ Vinson, Lowell Fulson en Big Mama Thornton. Zijn nummers zijn gecoverd door veel artiesten, waaronder Albert King, Albert Collins, Joe Louis Walker en Eva Cassidy. MacLeod’s nummers zijn te horen in veel tv-films en de hitserie In the Heat of the Night

Between 1981 and 1984, Walter Trout was the lead guitarist in Canned Heat. It was during this time that he crossed paths with John Mayall. Here’s a photo of Walter when he met Mayall for the first time in 1981.

Walter Trout: I was touring the world playing big shows with John Mayall, he was paying me incredible money. In the world of being a side man blues guitarist, John Mayall is the pinnacle, you can't get higher than that. Where are you going to go from there? You can play with Buddy Guy or BB King, but you're gonna stand at the back and play chords all night. With Mayall you're in one of the top blues acts in the world and he features you all night. He nurtures you, and develops you. But when we came home from the tours I still wanted to play. I had the house band in a little bar on the beach and I'd be in there six nights a week playing from 6 to 1:30, playing all sorts of stuff, blues, Beatles songs, anything we felt like, we didn't care. I got to play to my heart's content.

Carloso Santana told me there's 100,000 guitar players in the world who'd give their right ball to be in John Mayall's band, but I wanted to play, and write and front a band. I got the chance to make my first album, and the guys in that little bar became The Walter Trout Band.
