From Old Aramaic to modern dialects, Stefan Bruweleit examines how Aramaic verbs function—whether they express aspect, tense, or mood. This study not only clarifies Biblical Aramaic’s participle usage but also traces the roots of North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic dialects back to a common ancestor. Highly recommended for linguists, historians, and anyone interested by the evolution of language. Find out more: https://brill.ws/ho1-187

Following the announcement of drastic budget cuts to higher education and research in the Netherlands, our staff will join protests in Utrecht on Thursday to make their voices heard.

Both Universiteit Leiden / Leiden University and Utrecht University have made it clear that the cuts will require them to axe or merge humanities programs and potentially lay off staff. Totaling EUR 1 billion, the cuts will also slash support for early-career research grants, open science and international students across the country.

The humanities play a crucial role in addressing the many challenges of today. When governments and the media want to understand the nature of conflicts – between Russia and Ukraine, China and Taiwan, or in the Middle East – they turn to experts in the humanities and social sciences. These indispensable academic disciplines help society navigate geopolitical choices, understand how we got here, and chart a way forward to a better future.

Show your support by commenting below, tagging someone you'd like to take with you, and joining us on November 14 in Utrecht!

If you can't come, follow along online! Keep an eye on our socials, your inbox and degruyterbrill.com on that day to be one of the first to get to know the new us.

Let's start a new chapter together!
