Today, 23 August, is the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, commemorating the 1791 uprising in what is now Haiti—a powerful demand for freedom that continues to resonate.

Days like this are important to inscribe the tragedy of the slave trade in everyone’s memory. As we reflect on our shared history and the ongoing fight for justice, we’ve highlighted six essential books that explore the legacy of the slave trade. Let’s learn from the past and work toward a future where dignity and human rights are upheld for all.

Congratulations to our Dr Kathrin Zickermann, who was recently awarded a grant by the Strathmartine Trust, http://strathmartinetrust.org/!

The grant is for a research trip to Northern Germany and Poland to investigate the early modern Scottish communities and Alexander Erskein, and is part of the research for her upcoming monograph on 'Complex Identities and Cultural Integration: Alexander Erskein (1598 - 1656) and Swedish Service' with Brill Publishing.

🎨 Brill’s iconic mantelpiece restored!

Back in 1750, Samuel Luchtmans I, the son of Brill’s founder, commissioned an allegorical mantelpiece by Nicolaas Reyers. It depicted Pallas Athena and Hermes, with Leiden professors as children, symbolizing learning and commerce. The painting, inspiring Brill’s logo for over a century, hung in Brill’s typesetting room until it required restoration after falling in 2022.

The frame was restored by a Leiden-based company specializing in antique furniture, and the canvas was treated by a professional restorer, who also touched up some discolored parts and applied a new layer of varnish. Now it is finally visible again in full glory in our canteen, the Plantijn!

Thank you to Arjan van Dijk, Brill’s Publishing Director for History, who offered a tour about the fascinating history and restoration of the piece to interested colleagues last month.
