In 2022, Leiden European City of Science presented a 365 days science festival for anyone with a curious mind, with the overall aim to connect science with society. As a European pilot project, we paved the way for a brand new tradition. As a creative team, we experimented with new ways of public engagement with science: out of the ivory towers and into the neighbourhoods of the city. Now, we will share our experiences, results and lessons learned with you.

We are pleased to invite you to join our Hybrid Expert Meeting on Friday the 23rd of June).
The Expert Meeting is open to everyone with a curious mind, so please pass on this message!

We are proud to present a KEYNOTE lecture by the internationally renown strategist, consultant, and thought leader Michael Peter Edson. Michael will present his bird-eye view on Leiden2022 in the context of international developments in Open Science, Science Communication, and Public Engagement.

The Expert Meeting will be moderated by Pedro Russo, featuring interactive, curated panels on the following topics:
GETTING CLOSER TO CITIZENS: The local, distributed Leiden2022 Model for Public Engagement with Science
BRAVE YOUNG MINDS: Fostering youth engagement in science, culture and society

After a successful in Leiden European City of Science, EUCYS 2023 will take place in , Belgium.

The European Union (EU) Contest for Young Scientists, an initiative of the European Commission, was set up to promote the ideals of cooperation and interchange between young scientists. The Contest is the annual showcase of the best of European student scientific achievement and as such attracts widespread media interest.

The EU Contest gives students the opportunity to compete with the best of their contemporaries at European level.

We wish EUCYS contestants the best of luck! You will be able to follow the event day by day on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. On the dedicated event website, you will be able to find more information and discover the complete program of the event.

De komende maanden komt de Wijscobus op woensdagmiddagen naar BplusC in Het Gebouw. Hier kunnen kinderen van alle leeftijden terecht bij Jos om mee te doen aan zijn uiteenlopende programma om kinderen interessante weetjes te leren en hier zelf mee aan de slag te gaan. Jos neemt de knutselspullen en andere objecten mee. Jij hoeft alleen maar je gezond verstand mee te nemen!

Tijdens Leiden 2022 trokken Wijscomannen Jos van den Broek en Danny Molenaar door de stad om nieuwsgierigheid op te wekken bij jong en oud. Hun knalroze Wijscokar zat altijd vol met bijzondere vondsten: van grote walviswervels tot de priegeligste insectjes.

Leiden European City of Science 2022 was organized under the flag of EuroScience in Strasbourg, with the support of the Founding Partners: Gemeente Leiden Universiteit Leiden, Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum - LUMC and Hogeschool Leiden. Leiden2022 connected all kinds of partners locally, nationally and internationally, and cooperated actively with them.

With the Ministry of the Future in mind, Roosmarijn van de Velde set up a project that sought to hold local assemblies in Leiden. During these assemblies, citizens discuss their village’s and city’s future. In this way, local assemblies, an integral part of the Ministry, seamlessly fit in with this bottom-up movement and the trend of citizen assemblies.
Everyone is encouraged to organise a local assembly. Those who want to know how can use a special ‘toolkit’ filled with ideas, practical tips, and inspiring examples, which is found on the website of the Ministry.
The first local assembly took place in June 2021 at the Burcht in Leiden. Read more in the article below.

Something unique happened during Leiden European City of Science 2022. When EuroScience awarded the upcoming 10th edition of the EuroScience Open Forum ESOF to Leiden in 2017, the Dutch city turned the tables. Instead of hosting a scientific conference surrounded by public activities, Leiden presented an extensive, year-round science festival with ESOF as a scientific pinnacle. This bold move illustrates the innovative power of Leiden2022.

Taking place every two years, the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) is the largest transdisciplinary science conference in Europe. ESOF was conceptualised by EuroScience, a membership-based non-profit association based in Strasbourg. It aims to foster open debate about science and create networks in research and innovation. Leiden hosted the tenth edition of ESOF2022.

Wijkcomité Vreewijk organiseert op zaterdag 25 maart samen met het Citizen Science Lab en de Taxon Foundation een mini-expeditie langs de Witte Singel.

(Urban) Jungle is een evenement in het kader van Leiden City of Science waarin we u kennis laten maken met de natuur in onze wijk en uw eigen tuin. Nu het weer een beetje lente wordt is er weer van alles te zien, vooral als je goed kijkt.

Leiden European City of Science 2022 is genomineerd voor een Gouden Giraffe Publieksprijs. De Gouden Giraffe is de award voor de beste evenementen van Nederland.

Naast de juryprijzen in diverse categorieën, en de Next Generation Award, kan er ook gestemd worden voor de publieksprijs. Deze award wordt uitgereikt aan het meest creatieve eventconcept, en jullie bepalen!

De Oostvlietpolder is een fruitbos rijker!🍎🍐

Gisteren plantten wethouder Ashley North (Klimaat, Mobiliteit en Financiën), Eduard Groen (Bomenbond) en Meta Knol (Leiden European City of Science 2022) de 52e nieuwe fruitboom – een bosappel🍏 – in het fruitbos.

Het bos telt 52 nieuwe bomen, één voor elke week dat Leiden European City of Science was. De nieuwe bomen maken de Oostvlietpolder nog aantrekkelijker voor mens en dier: er kan gewandeld en geplukt worden en dieren zoals de wilde bij, vogels en vlinders komen graag op deze bomen af.

De nieuwe aanplant in het Fruitbos is een samenwerking van de BomenBond, Leiden 2022, Stichting Het Zuid-Hollands Landschap en de gemeente Leiden.
