A LIFE STORY
This 695-page book contains the life story of Geshe Sonam Gyaltsen, the residentiel teacher of the Maitreya Institute in the Netherlands.
Geshela's story begins with his birth in Lhasa in 1941, and he graphically describes the Tibetan culture of that time and the life of his highly spiritually developed family.
At the age of 18, Geshela fled to India as a result of the Chinese occupation. Together with 1300 other philosophy students from all Tibetan monastic traditions, they work hard to maintain the Dharma in Buxaduar under the most terrible circumstances.
In 1990 he is asked by his German sponsor to teach a group of German students. In 1991 Geshela is asked to become the residentiel teacher of the Maitreya Institute.
When all formalities are in order, Geshela arrives in the Netherlands on July 22, 1991.
In the book he describes his experiences with Dutch culture, the organization of the Maitreya Institute, the way he interacts with his students and the subjects he has taught so far.
In the last chapter, Geshela talks about his efforts to preserve the monastic tradition of Gaden Jangste Monastery through teaching the rituals and melodies, writing books and through the financial support through the Dhonden Foundation.
The book is a great source of information about the traditional monastic system and gives a nice insight into Tibetan culture.
