Flow Tide by Artefakt on Delsin Records

With Flow Tide, Artefakt returns to their trusted Delsin homebase and continues where they left off with their last Brain Dripper EP from 2022. A flawless fusion of melancholic electronica and impeccable techno grooves.

Artist Feature 05: Artefakt

Artefakt is the Dutch producer Nick Lapien, working out of Berlin. The project began as his duo with Robin Koek, a partnership of more than a decade with releases on Field Records, Delsin and Tikita and the 2017 debut album 'Kinship' for Delsin. Koek has since moved into sound design and teaching, leaving Lapien to carry Artefakt forward on his own and to run De Stijl, the label they launched in 2019 and the home of his Collaborations series.

He is back on Delsin with the 'Flow Tide EP', up for pre-save now. The last Artefakt record on the label was 'Brain Dripper' in 2022, and this is the first one Lapien has produced alone, five tracks that set melancholic electronica against techno grooves. The A side sits in organic, mysterious atmospheres over the rippling rhythms of the sea, and the B side picks up the pace with two reverberating techno trips.

For the fifth edition of our Artist Feature series, Nick talks about the album cover that pulled him in at fifteen, the squat parties where listening turned into taking part, and the worn-out tape loop the project ended up named after.

NOUS050 pre-save now: Se upp i backen / Lore by Dorisburg and Human Space Machine on Nous'klaer Audio.

The catalogue opened in 2013 with a Mattheis EP. Fifty numbers later the label marks it with a split, one artist a side. Dorisburg has the A with Se upp i backen, a sun-drenched tech house groove, and it is his first record for the label. Human Space Machine takes the flip into classic progressive territory. 12" and digital.

Before Dorisburg there was Cloud, the name Alexander Berg used around the Gonkyburg scene in Gothenburg in the early 2000s. His older brother Christoffer records as Hird and was one of its names, and Nils Krogh was in that orbit too, the pair later forming Genius of Time. Solo, Berg has recorded for Aniara and Northern Electronics, and Hivern Discs put out his album Irrbloss in 2016. Human Space Machine came up the other way, co-founding De Lichting in Amsterdam, which has been a home since alongside SoHaSo, Midgar and AEX. His Mopo was NOUS035 in 2024. He works a trippy, reduced strain of techno, and has played De School, Tresor and Doel, with Jane Fitz and Surgeon among the DJs backing his records.

MCEC082 pre-save now: Edge of Sanity by Detroit's Filthiest on Motor City Electro Company.

He has ascended from darkness with this one, dark electro at 140 BPM built on a nasty nasty bassline. What else would you expect. The thriller titles have been stacking up for years, Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, Cruel Intentions, and this one goes past them into horror.

Julian Shamou came up on DJ Godfather's Databass in the mid-90s, recording as DJ Nasty, Digitek and 313 Bass Mechanics before Detroit's Filthiest took over as the main name. Motor City Electro Company is his own label and has been since 1999. He still works outside it, and landed on Spinnin' Deep this spring next to Jamie Fielding.

NOUS051 out now: Black Swords / Timeless Time by Polygonia and Melatonin Man on Nous'klaer Audio.

Polygonia takes the A side with Black Swords, 140 BPM, gliding between deep waters and shimmering bubbles at the surface, fluid yet staccato. Melatonin Man answers on the B side with Timeless Time, 16 BPM slower and leaning electro. It is his first release under the alias since 2020, and he brought it back for its first live show, played at Draaimolen on Nous'klaer's own stage.

Polygonia is Lindsey Wang, a BLITZ resident in Munich who runs QEONE and co-founded the IO label and collective. Her album Dream Horizons came out on Dekmantel last year. Melatonin Man is Tammo Hesselink, who records under his own name for Nous'klaer, Delsin's Mantis series and Blank Mind. He started the alias as an exchange student in Madrid with sleep issues, and it ran to a single EP, Cruise Control Love, before he put it to sleep.
