TELECOM NEWS - Masmovil cancels two-thirds of Spanish state-backed rural fibre projects

Spanish telecommunications provider Masmovil, the country’s fourth largest network operator, has decided to cancel two-thirds of the digital divide fibre broadband projects it had signed up to because they aren’t economically viable, reports business daily Expansion. The company had committed to 18 projects backed by the government’s Broadband Expansion Programme (PEBA) for 2017 and was due to receive EUR 4.70 million in state aid to roll out fibre networks in underserved rural areas but has rejected EUR 3.03 million of that amount for a total of 11 projects.

Although the operator refrained from giving reasons for its decision, unnamed sources cited in the report said Masmovil had applied for 33 digital divide projects but had been allocated just 18 projects across various regions, meaning the majority were no longer profitable.

The news comes just a week after the Spanish government announced a new project, dubbed "Plan 300x100", to bring fibre-optic broadband access to all localities and 95 percent of the population by 2021 in a total investment of EUR 525 million.

If there is no signal on your mobile phone, can you still make calls using the “emergency calls only” feature?

At least one carrier needs to have coverage in the location you are trying to make an emergency call from. If none of them do, your mobile phone will not be able to connect an emergency call. The physical components for connecting to cell phone towers of various carriers and various technology (2G, 3G, 4G, etc) are mostly the same. The difference comes in which cell towers you tune into. A cell phone connects to a tower by tuning into what are called bands or channels. For something simple as GSM it is literally frequency bands. For newer technology like CDMA and LTE it is a bit more complicated because the tower signal jumps frequency bands and is mathematically encoded.

When you buy phones from different carriers, they are set to ignore bands or channels that the carrier doesn’t use. It serves several purposes:
1. It ensures your phone doesn’t waste time and battery tuning to cell towers that won’t accept them (if you have an KPN service, the Vodafone tower will reject you even if your phone can see its signal and could in theory connect to it).
2. It makes sure you can’t use your ‘SIM-locked’ phone with another provider until you unlock it for that provider.
3. It limits the need for the phone to tests signal strengths as the software on the phone will pick the best tower out of all the towers your phone can see. You always want the tower nearest to you so you get the fastest data and best quality call available.

When you make an emergency call, the software that is responsible for picking the tower tells the tuning software it is an emergency call and the tower will give it priority over all other calls. If the tower is full and has no capacity left, it will kick out someone else to make space for the emergency call.
You don’t even need a SIM card to make an emergency call, the phone will still tune into a tower with good signal and provide the user the “Emergency call mode” functionality. The phone will always try to search for a tower near you with a good enough signal to connect, which is why if there is no signal the phone battery will drain quicker due to the continuous searches it performs in the background. To safe your battery you can enable “Airplane mode” on the phone, if you try to use the “Emergency phone mode” it will automatically switch off “Airplane mode” to allow the phone to search for a tower near you and allow you to make the call.

There are a lot of different emergency numbers around the globe, for example Europe often has 112 and the USA has 911. In theory an USA phone in Europe should automatically translate 911 to 112 if the user dials the wrong emergency number by mistake.

Grote cyberaanval met bewakingscamera’s verwacht.

Volgens beveiligingsbedrijf Check Point is er een enorme cyberaanval op komst, waarbij gebruik wordt gemaakt van bewakingscamera’s en andere op internet aangesloten apparaten. Onderzoekers constateren de vorming van een groot botnet.

Slecht beveiligde, intelligente apparaten worden steeds vaker misbruikt door cybercriminelen om aanvallen uit te voeren. Hierbij wordt gebruik gemaakt van de rekenkracht van de apparaten, zonder dat de legitieme gebruiker daar veel van merkt. Eerder werd op deze wijze het Mirai-netwerk gevormd, waarmee in de Verenigde Staten het internet werd overbelast. Veel websites bleven lange tijd onbereikbaar.

Check Point ving eind september de eerste signalen op dat er een nieuwe aanval op komst is. Zo werd software ontdekt waarmee de beveiliging van intelligente camera’s wordt omzeild. De software werd op camera’s van allerlei verschillende merken aangetroffen en bleek afkomstig van andere slimme apparaten. Volgens het beveiligingsbedrijf is dit nog de stilte voor de storm en wordt binnenkort een orkaan verwacht.

UK internet speed guarantees must be realistic, says Ofcom. The proposals give consumers the right to exit contracts penalty-free if speeds fall below a guaranteed minimum. Ofcom says there is a mismatch between what is advertised, and the speeds customers receive.
But experts say speeds are affected by different factors, and are not strictly a measure of connection to a device.

New Ofcom rules require ISPs to be realistic about speeds before customers purchase contracts.

Google released a line of new products on Wednesday. When the Google Pixel Buds are paired with a new handset, the Google Pixel 2, the earbuds can tap into Google Assistant.
In addition to the translation of 40 languages, Google Assistant can also alert users to notifications, send texts and give directions.
