Blown Cylinder Head Gasket: The most common culprit. A failed or burned head gasket allows engine coolant to seep directly into the cylinder.
Cracked Cylinder Head or Block: Extreme thermal stress or overheating can cause cracks in the metal, which allows cooling water to leak into the combustion chamber.
Leaking Cylinder Liner O-rings: If your engine uses wet cylinder liners, the rubber sealing rings at the bottom may have degraded or failed, allowing coolant to bypass.
Damaged Aftercooler or Charge Air Cooler: If the engine uses a water-cooled turbocharger or intercooler, an internal rupture can allow water to be drawn into the intake manifold and subsequently the cylinders.
Wet Stacking: If the generator runs continuously at light or no-load, it will not reach optimal operating temperature. This causes unburned fuel, carbon, and normal engine moisture (condensation) to build up in the exhaust, which can seep back through open exhaust valves.
Faulty Exhaust/Cooling Design (Marine/Backup generators): For setups where water is injected into the exhaust, a failing exhaust riser, faulty anti-siphon valve, or cranking the engine repeatedly without the raw water pump spinning can push seawater into the cylinders.
