Congratulations to all the graduates this year, not only from UPLB but also from various universities across the Philippines! I’ve been there too, and I can truly say that it’s an incredibly joyful experience. But the real joy comes when your work serves the community, particularly those in the marginalized sectors, and makes a positive impact (small or big). There's a unique fulfillment that comes with public service, and I hope you’ll feel that same joy just as I have.

Have you also encountered this native fig species along the road? It's called Is-is Ibon. The ripe fruit is red in color and is a favorite of birds and other animals. I once tried the ripe fruit, and it’s somewhat sweet, but it can make your mouth itch if you eat too much. So, it’s best not to taste it unless you're sure about it. The leaves of this plant are also rough. Unlike other 𝘍𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴 species, this one can be found even if it's not near a river or stream, based on my own observation.

There’s still limited research on Is-is Ibon, so if you’re looking for a research topic, you might want to consider studying it.

This is Alagasi, also known in English as "Toothscrubber." It is a native tree or shrub species found throughout the Philippines and is quite common in many areas. The leaves are coarse and rough, which is why they are sometimes used to scrub pots, pans, and other kitchen utensils.

In traditional Philippine medicine, a decoction of the leaves is used to relieve stomach problems and vomiting (Dapar et al., 2020). A root decoction is also traditionally used to treat tuberculosis, cough, and other ailments (ARCBC, 2004). The bark fibers are used for making ropes, and the wood is said to be durable.

I came across this Alagasi tree in a forest in Pakil, Laguna.

Kailangan may hard hat at reflective vest.

It’s also advisable to wear long sleeves or anything that can protect your arms, especially if you know there are plenty of thorny plants, itchy vegetation, or other things that could stick to your skin in the forest.

By the way, that picture is from my very first fieldwork experiece in Didipio, Nueva Vizcaya as a forester. Cute o hindi? Apir sa mga foresters diyan!

This is Hinlaumo, also known as woolly mallotus, native tree species in the Philippines. This tree is commonly found in parang (grassland-shrubland) vegetation and is widespread throughout the country, especially in second-growth forests. I came across this tree while hiking a mountain in Pakil, Laguna, where a large dam is planned to be constructed.

It’s said that the young leaves are edible when cooked. Has anyone here tried them? Like some 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘢 species, the leaves of Hinlaumo can also be used as food wrappers.

There’s still limited research on Hinlaumo, so if you’re still looking for a thesis or research topic (and your adviser has been waiting on you for ages 🙂 haha), maybe this is your sign to consider it.

Please help me to popularize our native plants by sharing and/or liking this post. I need your help to do it.

This is the house I was talking about in the viral story of my life, the one I can finally call mine. I used to roam like a lost goat 🙂, but now I have a place to call home. My number one advice? Lakasan ang loob and fight!
