Baptist Distinctive Class: Chapter 2
Topic: Bible Authority

To believe in the authority of the Bible means to accept its teaching as the norm of life and practice. Baptist believe that all Scripture is inspired by God and is good for teaching, correction and training for righteous and holy living.

The source of Authority comes from it's Inspiration, it's content and fulfillment. However there are some problems in the matter of Interpretation. Example of which are the day of worship and in terms of Interpretation of the role of women in the church.

Descriptive and Prescriptive Interpretation. Some bible readers do not know how to distinguish between descriptive and Prescriptive passages. They simply treat all of the bible as a prescription from God without considering the context and the kind of literature being dealt with.

Selectiveness is another issue. Some preach about praising and spiritual deliverance more than justice and God's preferential love for the poor.

To believe in the authority of the bible means to study and teach all the themes in it, not just what one likes and feels comfortable with.
