“ISANG KOMEDYA SA LANGIT”has been officially selected as one of only two Filipino films featured at the Hong Kong ASEAN Film Festival, hosted by the Hong Kong–ASEAN Foundation.

The ASEAN Film Festival is a prestigious, non-profit event dedicated to promoting cross-cultural exchange through Southeast Asian cinema. Held annually in Hong Kong, it showcases the region’s most compelling films and voices.

I learned in school that the Spanish pronunciation of the letters c (before e or i) and z in Spain often sounds like a soft th, but here in the Philippines, we’re more used to pronouncing it as s—just like in many Latin American countries, including Mexico.

So when I was in the store of Purificación García and casually said, “Purifikashyon Gar-si-a,” the sales personnel gently corrected me: “Pu-ri-fi-ka-thion Gar-thi-a.” I found it funny, but quickly pocketed my smile.

I admit I exaggerated this moment a bit in my script—it just felt too good not to! A lot changed in the story after I came back from Madrid, and honestly, I’m very happy with the results.

This is known as the difference between:

Ceceo (th-sound) — typical in northern and central Spain
Seseo (s-sound) — common in Latin America, the Canary Islands, and southern Spain (e.g., Andalusia)

One of the most delightfully absurd parts of Isang Komedya sa Langit isn't just the plot—it’s what the characters wear.

From priests in caricatured cassocks to ukay-ukay chaos and cosplay madness, the costumes are a full-on visual punchline.

When the priests land in modern-day Manila, they get mistaken for cosplayers (!!) and meet a fabulously funky Lola (Carmi Martin!) who gives them a crash course in ukay ukay fashion. Think: flower pants, hip hop, and streetwear meets holy priests.

“Sacred meets pop culture—that was the vision,” says director Hwang.

The wardrobe team? They had the time of their lives. Nothing matched. That was the point. Each priest ends up with their own vibe: one hip-hop, one street, one full-on clown.

Costume = comedy + chaos. And it works. is not just a movie. It’s a fashion fever dream.
