🎶 New to our catalogue!
We’re proud to welcome Dutch composer Xavier van de Poll (1995) to Deuss Music. Trained in Western classical music, Van de Poll has fully immersed himself in the traditions of Chinese classical music, with a deep and ongoing engagement — particularly with Peking opera. His work stands out for its vivid colors, rich orchestration, and myth-inspired storytelling.

In 2023, his piece 'Madhouse' — commissioned by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra — was praised by NRC as “the highlight of the evening” of KCO Opening Night. Other commissions include the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, JeugdOrkest Nederland, and philharmonie zuidnederland.

📍 Currently based in Shanghai, Van de Poll is pursuing a PhD on how contemporary Dutch composers incorporate Chinese elements into their compositions.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ in NRC for rIJks by Hawar Tawfiq, premiered by the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and Karina Canellakis:

"In his powerful orchestral work rIJks, he depicts a walk from the IJ to the Rijks. The premiere at the NTR Saturday matinee was completely convincing.
(...)
Thus Tawfiq convinced again with beautiful sound painting and an original clear form."

🎉 World Premiere Tomorrow!

We're excited for the world premiere of rIJKs by Hawar Tawfiq — performed by the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest conducted by Karina Canellakis, tomorrow at Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam during the NTR ZaterdagMatinee.

Commissioned by the NTR ZaterdagMatinee in honor of the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam’s city rights, rIJKs is inspired by Tawfiq’s personal experience of Amsterdam — his first visit, walks through the city, its rich cultural diversity, and the iconic Rijksmuseum. The piece takes listeners on a musical journey through Amsterdam, from the misty IJ river, through bustling streets filled with many languages, to a “burst of amazement” at the Rijksmuseum.

Bela Bartók schreef de balletmuziek bij het sprookje van De houten prins voor een gigantisch orkest. Hij noemde het zelf geen ballet, maar een ‘symfonisch gedicht waarop gedanst wordt’.

🎶 Tune in tonight at 8 PM! 🎶

The French radio will broadcast La Folia, a new organ work by Kate Moore (composer), during their program Le Concert du Soir.

Commissioned by Radio France, La Folia had its world premiere in February in Paris, performed by organist Matthias Havinga. Tonight’s broadcast features the recording of that very premiere performance.

🎶 To celebrate Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary, composer Hawar Tawfiq has created a brand-new orchestral work: rIJks. It premieres on May 24 at Het Concertgebouw Amsterdam during the NTR ZaterdagMatinee.

Inspired by his very first, awe-filled moments in the city – from misty ships on the IJ to the majestic beauty of the Rijksmuseum – Tawfiq transforms his experience of Amsterdam into music.

In our article, he shares how he rediscovered the city by truly looking, listening, and feeling – and how that journey became sound. 🎻✨
