Back to da Riddim follows entrepreneur, music producer and protagonist Joost Nauta (JMotive) on his journey to Jamaica, the birthplace of reggae. Living with a progressive muscle disease, he travels to Kingston to realise his dream of producing a reggae album, while honouring the memory of his good friend Tito and family and friends who passed away, with whom he shared a deep love for reggae.
In Jamaica, Joost is embedded in the heart of the reggae scene by the legendary Firehouse Crew, led by MD George Miller, a band that has backed many iconic artists – including Luciano and Sizzla – on countless hits. Together with director Bouba Dola and producer Tangerine Tree, the film transforms the studio, the streets and the Jamaican hills into a spiritual landscape where music, grief, resilience and connection come together. Back to da Riddim shows how a spiritual journey to Jamaica can inspire others who are dealing with loss and seeking a deeper connection through music.
