Soup deserves its own moment in Portugal. Especially in this cold and rainy weather.
One thing that surprises almost every visitor is how serious Portugal is about soup. It’s not a starter you skip. It’s part of daily life. Lunch menus, school meals, cafés, even fast food. 😅
Yes, McDonald’s in Portugal serves soup year-round - the only one in the world that has soup as part of their permanent menu!
If you’re visiting Portugal, these are the soups worth trying.
🥄Caldo verde
The classic. Thinly sliced kale, potatoes, olive oil, and chouriço. Simple, comforting, and everywhere for a reason.
🥄Sopa de legumes
The everyday soup you’ll see at cafés and restaurants. Pureed vegetables, warm, filling, and often the healthiest thing on the menu.
🥄Canja de galinha
Portuguese chicken soup. Light, soothing, and what people eat when they’re sick, tired, or just need comfort.
🥄Sopa de feijão
Bean-based and heartier. This one feels like a full meal, especially on colder days.
🥄Fish and seafood soups
More common near the coast. Rich, brothy, and very Portugal. If it’s on the menu, order it.
Soup here isn’t fancy. It’s practical, affordable, and deeply ingrained in the culture. And once you get used to it, you start craving it too.
Swipe through to see some of the soups we’ve tried so far. And figure out which one of our kids likes soup more than the other 🤣
