We've taken the liberty to translate this Portuguese review about Flight Recorder debut album, 'Sirens', from Via Nocturna 2000.
Congrats Robin Van Vliet and Marcel Singor. Well deserved.

"Sirens marks the debut of the Flight Recorder project , a duo formed by Robin van Vliet and Marcel Singor , two musicians with solid careers in the Dutch progressive rock scene , linked to names as diverse as Anouk , Kayak , Ayreon , and Star One . In a context where neo-progressive continues to find fertile ground, especially in the Netherlands, Sirens emerges as a clear example of how the more melodic and accessible side of the genre can still sound fresh and relevant. Here, the focus is not so much on technical display, but on the solidity of the compositions, in a writing that prioritizes emotional clarity and the fluidity of the arrangements. In the best tradition of classic prog , the album opens with an epic of about a quarter of an hour, divided into eight acts, which immediately reveals confidence and artistic vision. An ambitious but well-supported start, where melody and emotion walk hand in hand. The central body of the album opts for more concise themes, based on calm tempos, dreamy atmospheres, and a clear 80s feel. The fusion between cinematic pop , rock, and progressive touches is done with balance. The closing track returns to a more explicitly progressive approach, exploring dynamic contrasts and ending the album with a final solo full of feeling. Overall, Sirens establishes itself as a confident and mature debut, leaving the clear impression that the Flight Recorder project has the scope and ambition to explore even bolder paths in the future. [82%]"

‐---------------------

Hi! Let me tell you something about my upcoming album A Fleeting Light.

The CD contains only five tracks. Not a lot, you might think, but then again: the title track alone takes up almost 37 minutes. The other four are shorter pieces, and in total there’s almost 48 minutes of music on it.

What’s so special about this project? Well, it’s probably not what you’d expect from me, especially after albums like The Lion’s Dream and Velvet Armour. There’s only one instrument: piano. No overdubs. No vocals. No guitar or bass. No drums. Two tracks (A Fleeting Light and Chasing the Wind) are pure improvisations, which means I did not prepare anything, but just pressed record, took off and let my fingers do the work. That’s usually how I begin writing anyway, only this time I didn’t stop when I heard something worth keeping or pursuing. I simply took it from there, kept on recording and moved on.

Composing and improvising music are basically the same thing. But composing is like looking for the ripe apples in a tree and then collect and rearrange them, until your basket’s full (or the tree empty). Improvising is like climbing that same tree, but this time blindfolded and without a basket. On another level: composing is improvising in slow motion. In both cases you never really know where you’re going to end up.

The other three tracks on the album are new versions of instrumentals you may recognize from my musical past, but now these are stripped down to the black and white keys of the instrument that I have written virtually all my work on.

This is music to be absorbed slowly, preferably in a comfortable chair (or any place you feel comfortable in) and eyes closed, to begin a journey through an imaginary landscape. I’ll be there to keep you company.

A Fleeting Light, release March 18, 2026 at OOB Records. (www.oob-records.com) Trailer will be posted, and pre orders start January 19. A couple of weeks in advance of the album the track Chasing The Wind will be released as a single (digital only, of course). OOB Records

OOB Records and Friendly Folk Records mark a major milestone as they celebrate 10 years of music management and 7 years as independent record labels, reflecting the vision of founder Kathy Keller.

The journey began in 2015 with My Music Matters Management, supporting emerging and established progressive rock and folk artists. In 2017, the company evolved into Friendly Folk Records (FFR) & Promotion, focusing on folk and acoustic genres. Responding to growing artist demand, Keller launched Out Of The Box (OOB) Records in 2020, expanding into progressive rock, indie, and other contemporary styles.

Over the past decade, both labels have developed internationally recognized artists, strengthened by collaborations with wholesale distribution partners, festivals, and promotion companies that expanded their global reach. Notable artists:

· Kayak (OOB): The legendary Dutch progressive rock band released their final production in 2025 under OOB Records.

· Ton Scherpenzeel (OOB & FFR): Renowned composer and keyboardist known for Kayak, Earth and Fire, Camel, Youp van ’t Hek, and an acclaimed solo catalogue.

· Tom Portman (OOB & FFR): Irish folk artist and Dobro® specialist.

· Mark Truey Trueack (OOB): Australian artist known for Unitopia and UPF.
