In a recent interview on Hot 97, Tems, the Nigerian singer born Temilade Openiyi and a Grammy Award winner, said something that should have prompted more scrutiny than it has. “I’m not an Afrobeats artist,” she said.

Tems, Wizkid and Burna Boy have all publicly rejected the label. The Western music industry applies it anyway. The question worth asking is who the category is actually serving.
