Please read this in case you plan to go to Rotterdam instead of Amsterdam> It'll make a change:
ROTTERDAM THE CITY TO COME BACK TO

IT’S a well-known fact: when doing business or attending a conference in a city abroad, the only things a person sees are the interior of a hotel, a meeting room or a conference room. At best there is time for some networking and a good dinner with business relations after which is goes straight to the airport and further down home. Rotterdam may well become home from home and that is what I’ve told delegates on a brief trip on board river boat Smaragd.

Onboard Smaragd, we appreciate networking, but please allow us to tell something about the leading European port, Rotterdam is. When we talk about the port, it is in terms of large, larger largest. It is about container carriers of over 13,000 TEU, the longest tankers and other vessels larger than life. The city boasts high rise buildings but cherishes its historic buildings as well, such as in the Scheepvaartkwartier (Shipping District), the Wereldmuseum which was the old Yachting Club in the 19th century, the nearby rowing club building De Maas and more.

Cruise line passengers, building and office; now Hotel New York
Rotterdam refurbished a former passenger terminal building dating back to the heydays of Holland America Line in the 50-ties. That was done in the 90s and later in the years 2000. At the time, daring cruise passengers found themselves close to huge building pits outside on the Wilhelminapier but not anymore. Today, one can admire high-rise buildings. Examples are the World Port Centre tower, designed by senior partner Paul Kalkhoven of Foster + Partners at the top of the pier. Further down the pier are high-rise housing and offices. A hotel, apartments and an office building De Rotterdam, has been designed by the internationally well-known Rem Koolhaas, founder of Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) is a valuable asset to the pier. Renzo Piano’s work has been materialised adjacent to De Rotterdam.

Out of the ordinary architecture can also be found at the right bank and elsewhere in the city opposite what is called Kop van Zuid. Just one remarkable building is the periscope shaped building of the maritime and shipping academy. Only 5 car minutes further down is Erasmus Medical Centre, which is part of Erasmus University.

It is no surprise that film producers have chosen Rotterdam as the backdrop of their movies or adverts. Jacky Chan is one of them. He had one of his fighting scenes filmed on top of the former Nedlloyd building Willemswerf, and on the Erasmus bridge.

Today the results of plans are clearly visible at the riverfronts and downtown. Note:
• Erasmusbrug; the bridge designed by Amsterdam-based architect Ben van Berkel and build by Belgian constructors. There are jokes about that.
• The refurbished Willemsburg, nicknamed Red Willem.
• The Markthal; an extraordinary design by Winy Maas.
• The Euromast, the 185 metres high observation tower, built by architect Huig A. Maaskant.
• Central Station/team CS headed by municipal architect Maarten Struijs: Benthem Crouwel Architekten, Meyer en Van Schooten Architecten and West 8.
• Delfshaven and the old port district, Het Witte Huis (The White House; once the tallest building in Europe) included.
• The converted docks into housing areas on the left and right banks of the river Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse)
• And many more attractive changes in the city centre and further down.

As is, the assumption that cruise passengers only disembark at the Rotterdam terminal for a trip to Amsterdam is not only firmly declined, but proven not true. The city of Rotterdam, but also of Delft and Dordrecht, nearby Kinderdijk with its series of typical Dutch windmills, and other touristic attractions, keep the sailing tourists in the region.
The choice is the tourist’s: “do you want to see historic canal houses? Go to Amsterdam and beyond! Do you prefer modern architecture? Rotterdam is the place to be!”

An nearly 10 years old Rotterdam icon demolished due to poor maintenance. The real estate managers seeking for open spaces may be the only ones who are pleased. Rotterdam inhabitants and tourists loved the yellow bridge over a busy road. A profitable businessmodel appear to be at the winning hand. Gemeente Rotterdam

Thank you for contacting us regarding your consignment. As you may be aware, Great Britain left the EU on the 1st January 2021. In line with Brexit and changes to legislation, customers outside of the United Kingdom may be subject to customs fees or import duties and taxes, which are levied once the order reaches the destination country. We are unable to cover any additional charges applied during the customs clearance process, these are to be paid for at the customer’s obligation. Unfortunately, we have no control over any charges applied and cannot comment or foresee on what they might be.

As per our T&Cs shipping costs are non-refundable. This is applicable to consignments that are returned by the customer, courier, fail the customs clearance process or are rejected on delivery.

For further information in relation to Brexit and our refund and returns policy, please refer to;

Please read what splendid isolation through Brexit means when ordering at UK-based companies.. It involves exports to the EU.
I e-mailed this to Vitabiotics
"I’m afraid I’m rather surprised that ordering from your UK-based company involves costs for customs clearance. As yet, Vitabiotics does not mention the fact that EU customers must be aware of additional charges for products and delays in delivery. Now I know what buying products from UK-based companies means after Brexit. As yet, the UK is regarded as a Third Country.
Dutch Post.nl e-mailed me the following after payment of Customs clearance costs: We received your payment on 08-10-2024. Thanks again!
Payment and shipment details:
Paid: € 11,14
Date: 08-10-2024
In conclusion this: Vitabiotics should be aware that its EU market is affected by legislation. Advise: don't buy British when you're based in the EU and the supplier in the UK!

IT seems that the hostages. Hamas has taken, are forgotten. Keith Siegel and Omri Miran are two of them: Video shows US and Israeli hostages alive in Gaza. BBC has given these hostages a voice. The Siegels were kidnapped from Kibbutz Kfar Aza on 7 October when Hamas attacked Israeli communities near Gaza, while Mr Miran was taken captive from Kibbutz Nir Oz.

To my mind Campaigners for should consider the hostage ordeal together with the civilians in Gaza. Hamas uses both groups as a human shield. Why don't we hear this. STOP WAR and stop the suffering of the Palestine civilians and the Israelis people who are captured.

Speaking under duress in the video released by the armed wing of Hamas, Mr Siegel, 64, and Mr Miran, 46, urged the Israeli government to agree a deal with Hamas for a ceasefire and the release of hostages.

"I have been here in Hamas captivity for 202 days. The situation here is unpleasant, difficult and there are many bombs," Mr Miran is heard saying.

Indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas to secure their release - along with the other remaining hostages - are continuing, with weeks of talks failing to produce an agreement.

Hamas rejected a previous proposal for a six-week ceasefire in exchange for the release of 40 of the remaining hostages.

The group has previously insisted that any deal should include a permanent end to the war, full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza and unrestricted return of displaced people to their homes. Israel insists it must destroy Hamas in Gaza and free the hostages.

It appears to be English Language Day. Friend Erik Lemmers mentioned it on air Lunchbreak Radio Rijnmond and AI filled the gap in my knowledge Saint George’s Day (23rd April) and the playwright Shakespeare died on that day in April.
United Nations English Language Day is celebrated on April 23rd each year. It was established by the UN’s Department of Public Information in 2010 tocelebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity, as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organisation. Here's the funny side of the language
