NASA Langley Team to Study Weather During Eclipse Using Uncrewed Vehicles. A six-person team of researchers from NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, will travel to Fort Drum, N.Y., to study changes in the Sun’s radiation as it reaches Earth before, during, and after the total solar eclipse April 8.

NASA Expanding Lunar Exploration with Upgraded SLS Mega Rocket Design
As NASA prepares for its first crewed Artemis missions, the agency is making preparations to build, test, and assemble the next evolution of its SLS (Space Launch System) rocket. The larger and power powerful version of SLS, known as Block 1B, can send a crew and large pieces of hardware to the Moon in a single launch and is set to debut for the Artemis IV mission.

XRISM Mission To Study ‘Rainbow’ of X-rays
A new satellite called XRISM (X-ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission, pronounced “crism”) aims to pry apart high-energy light into the equivalent of an X-ray rainbow. The mission, led by JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency), will do this using an instrument called Resolve.

Attendees of this year’s Space Symposium were understandably distracted by what was going on a thousand miles from Colorado Springs. The conference was bookended by SpaceX’s first attempt to launch Starship, scrubbed April 17 because of a frozen valve, and its liftoff on the second attempt three days later. In between, there was plenty of speculation about when it might launch, whether it would be successful and what it meant for the space industry.

Mars is known for its dust storms, which can cause problems for lander equipment and block out the sun that fuels solar panels. These punishing storms, which can last for weeks, have already caused damage to equipment and even killed NASA’s Opportunity rover. But they could also be dangerous to astronauts on the ground, who would rely on solar power for oxygen, heat, and water cleansing during future missions.
