Zonder meer het meest ingewikkelde stuk is ‘Floating Points on a Fixed Monorail’, één van de sterkere stukken van Aart Strootman. Een patroon van verdichte noten vormt de monorail, terwijl de fixed points worden gevormd door “gekke ornamenten en microtonaliteit”, aldus Strootman zelf. Ornamenten die soms uitstekend passen bij de klank van de monorail maar vaak ook totaal niet. Gelukkig niet, want het zijn juist die dissonanten die het stuk zo goed en verfrissend maken. Net op het moment dat je denkt dat je lekker in de groove zit, schopt Strootman je er hardhandig weer uit. - nieuwenoten.nl

Drift kwam tot stand door een verzoek van Sonic.art quartet om een nieuw werk te maken dat als een brug functioneert tussen het Credo uit Ockehgems Missa mi-mi en Steffen Schleiermacher’s Gregorianik 1.

Het begrip ‘drift’ is het Zuid-Afrikaans Engelse woord voor een voorde of een drecht: een doorwaadbare plaats in een rivier. In het Engels wordt zo’n plek aangeduid door het begrip ‘ford’ en in het Duits door het begrip ‘furt’. Vandaar plaatsnamen als Dordrecht, Oxford en Frankfurt.

Met andere andere woorden, Drift helpt je om een rivier van tijd over te steken van Ockecghems Missa mi-mi naar Schleiermachers interpretatie van Gregoriaans gezang.

Drift is langzame muziek met gestage tred. Drift is in eerste instantie bedoeld om in Gotische kerken te spelen. Het tempo moet aangepast worden aan de akoestiek van de ruimte om te voorkomen dat het klankbeeld troebel wordt.

Bart Visman - Or**es, Walks & Joys (2002-17).

Written at the request of Hans Woudenberg and dedicated to Otto Ketting, who provided the inspiration for this third movement of Or**es, Walks & Joys. The titles of the various movements are inspired by Leaves of Grass (1855), a poetry collection by Walt Whitman, and the pieces also draw their expressive—at times almost impressionistic—moods from that source. The work follows a classic four-movement structure: fast, slow, fast, slow. Yet that is the only aspect of the piece that feels classical.” – Bart Visman

Sedlak’s Barber of Seville transcription for nine-part harmonie ensemble reflects his background as a clarinet virtuoso. Unlike other arrangers, he often assigns vocal melodies to the first clarinet, with oboes and bassoons supporting key lines. While he generally preserves Rossini’s orchestration in instrumental passages, he adapts keys, textures, and repetitions for wind instruments. Notably, he transposes the overture from E major to C major and Rosina’s aria Una voce poco fa from E major to F major, giving the solo line to the clarinet. Through such arrangements, Sedlak helped bring Harmoniemusik to its artistic peak alongside Wendt and Triebensee.

“La Malinconia II is een vervolg op La Malinconia I. Dit werk, voor piano solo, werd geschreven in 2011 voor het ballet ‘Simply Marvel,’ gecreëerd door choreografe Regina van Berkel op verzoek van Cedar Lake, een vermaard dansgezelschap in New York
Malinconia II heeft net als Malinconia I een sombere ondertoon. Beide werken zijn onderdeel van een langere cyclus van werken gewijd aan het thema melancholie, iets dat deze tijd (het jaar 2013) van me vraagt. In contrast met La Malinconia I, is La Malinconia II veel korter en compacter. Het werk heeft een duidelijke spanningsopbouw en is gebaseerd op het gebruik van een zeer kort tweetoonsmotief.” - Theo Verbey

One of Mozart’s lesser known contemporaries is the composer Franz Vinzenz Krommer (1759-1831). Krommer was born as František Vincenč Kramář in Kameniče near Třebíč in 1759. He was trained as a violinist and organist and, later, in the early 1780s, he is reported to be “improving on his composition skills.”

The vast majority of Krommer’s works for winds consists of partitas. According to Koch’s Musikalisches Lexikon of 1802 a partita is an instrumental suite of dances in the first half of the 18th Century, but more recently it is also used for those compositions, that have been set for different kinds of wind instruments and in which except for the minuet other dance tunes seldom appear. A partita or Harmonie in fact is a four movement symphony for wind ensemble. Krommer and his publishers also use the description “Harmonie”. Thirteen partitas with opus numbers (oр. 45 I-III, 57, 67, 69, 71, 73, 76, 77, 78, 79 and 83) appeared in print during Krommer’s life time. Both the Chemische Druckerey and Steiner & Comp. published the Harmonie in Op. 73 in F major (with the Plate-Number 1092). This work can be dated rather precisely as 1808 IV.
