A distinguished evening of gratitude and reflection unfolded at the Babylon Hotel in The Hague, Dignitaries, close associates, and friends gathered to honor and bid farewell to Mr. J.E. Thijsen, Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba, and his wife, Mrs. Y. Thijsen-Rasmijn.
The farewell reception was organized by the House of Aruba in The Hague and marked the conclusion of an extraordinary chapter in public service spanning more than two decades.
The event drew an esteemed roster of guests, including former Prime Minister of Aruba, Evelyna “Evelyn” Wever-Croes, prominent diplomats, and respected Dutch figures such as former Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende. Their presence underscored the profound respect and admiration held for Mr. Thijsen, a statesman who played a pivotal role in strengthening Aruba’s diplomatic presence in the Netherlands, the European Union, and on the global stage.
In a heartfelt farewell address, Mr. Thijsen reflected on his distinguished career in public service: from his early tenure as Chairman of the MEP Parliamentary Group (2005–2009), to his service as Member of Parliament (2009–2017), President of Parliament (2017–2021), EU Representative (2021–2025), and most recently, Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba in The Hague (2022–2025).
Mr. Thijsen emphasized his enduring commitment to advancing Aruba’s visibility and interests through strategic diplomacy, institutional partnerships, and advocacy for Arubans living abroad. His leadership has left a lasting mark on Aruba’s international engagement and representation.
As he prepares to return to his legal profession and in Aruba, Mr. Thijsen shared a message that resonated deeply with the audience:
“If you can connect people, you can create the future.”
The evening was not only a farewell, but a celebration of a legacy built on vision, service, and integrity. It was a fitting tribute to a public servant whose contributions will continue to echo beyond the halls of government.
