22-6-1992. Two MiG-29s of the Czechoslovakian Air Force were present at the Royal Netherlands Air Force Open House at Gilze-Rijen AB. This was the first time in history MiG-29s could be seen at a Dutch airbase.

One took part in the flying display and one was present at the static. Both aircraft belonged to 11SLP, based at Žatec in Czechoslovakia.

On 31 December of 1993 Czechoslovakia and its Air Force seized to exist when it broke up into two seperate countries: Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

At the breakup, the MiG-29s were split evenly between the two new states. Realising the aircraft were expensive to maintain, the Czech government decided to sell its Fulcrums to Poland and left without an operational unit, Žatec was closed.

316 squadron was originally formed in 1953 at Eindhoven AB. After one year it was deactivated to be activated again for one and a half year in 1956.

The squadron was re-established at Gilze - Rijen AB on 01-07-71. Eindhoven based 314 Squadron was split to form the new 316 Squadron. After the work-up fase at Eindhoven AB the 22 NF-5A and 5 NF-5B of 316 squadron transferred to Gilze-Rijen AB on 27-04-72.

The Squadron ceased NF-5 operations on 01-05-91, being the last Dutch Squadron on NF-5 to start transition to the General Dynamics F-16A .

From March 31st to April 11th Vliegbasis Leeuwarden is hosting NATO Allied Air Command exercise Ramstein Flag 25. The exercise brings together over 90 aircraft from more than 15 Allied nations, operating from 12 Allied air bases across Europe. A report will follow on our website.
