WE ARE LOOKING FOR A NEW INTERN!!!

Production Intern 3-4 months
OVERVIEW
This internship involves providing administrative and research assistance in support of the
Unsettling Knowledge podcast which explores the traces of empire in (European) society, often
through themes related to popular culture. This internship would suit a candidate in both a
Research Masters course or a one year Masters course. It is a paid position and remote work, other
than days of recording.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Scheduling: drafting a schedule for recordings in the studio and getting episodes released
regularly.
● Research: the topics for each podcast come from a combination of ideas from Dr. Rachel
Gillett (main host) and the interns. Therefore, background research for a potential podcast
topic is expected.
● Episode production: This involved planning a topic, organising guests, and editing* the
episode after recording.
● Promotion: involves taking over the social media (Instagram and Facebook), to ensure that
there are regular posts, especially when there is an upcoming podcast to be released.
● Hosting: You can co-host an episode! Usually, it is the podcast that you have created from
scratch, so it often makes sense to want to be included in the recording.
*Editing can feel daunting, but it is doable. We have lots of guides/tutorials for how this process works- a
desire to learn is important!
WHAT WE OFFER YOU
● Independent Research: if topics relate to uncovering traces of empire, this internship allows
you the freedom to explore whatever idea you wish, building upon individual research and
interests.
● The chance to host/interview skills: The internship gives you the opportunity to hone in on
communication and interview technique during podcasts.
● Working with a collaborative team: We are a small team, but collaborative. Everything we
do is shared and transparent, meaning that everyone’s voice is equal. It fosters an
environment of goodwill and builds trust in being able to share ideas.
● Networking: you will encounter a lot of specialists in their field, making connections across
different groups.
● Access to Drift 6! (and other services)

EPISODE 22: IMPRINTS

In this episode, Dr. Rachel Gillett is joined by Dr. Grace Leksana and artist Elia Nurvista. They discuss Elia Nurvista's artwork, now on display at the Wereldmuseum in Amsterdam, and ask how it shows the impact of colonialism. The conversation, like the artwork, explores themes of food, gender, and artistic techniques. Elia's work invites us to think about how and why certain things of colonial and post-colonial Indonesia are remembered (or not.) This episode, brings Elia's art into conversation with Grace Leksana's research, and their rich discussion opened up insights into how colonialism has been remembered in Indonesia.
Dr. Grace Leksana is an Assistant Professor in Indonesian history in the Cultural History section of Utrecht University. Her most recent publication is: Memory culture of the anti Leftist violence in Indonesia: Embedded Remembering (Amsterdam University Press, 2023).

In this episode, Dr. Rachel Gillett speaks to Dr. Karel Berkhoff, Olha Klymenko, Dr. Gertjan Plets, and John Vsetecka to discuss the history of Ukraine’s independence, the motivation for Putin’s invasion, and the media coverage of the invasion, including issues of race and national identity.

MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:
Serhiy Zhadan: "You cannot hide behind Dostoyevsky. ‘Great Russian Humanist Culture’ is going under, like some unwieldy Titanic. And we answer what we said to that Russian warship F**K YOU." https://t.co/PUFfI7yN67
