Look who’s back! My DMR-2000 and PCM-1630 units got a well deserved maintenance treatment. Not that they were broken, oh no! But since I wanted them to stay up and running, they got checked up, aligned and recapped here and there. Ready for many years and tapes to come.
What is it? The PCM-1630 or 1610 format was a video based digital audio format introduced in the late 70’s and found it’s way into mainly mastering studios around the world during the 80’s and 90’s. It became the standard for CD manufacturing in times when harddisks weren’t around yet, using Umatic tapes and a heavy modified Umatic recorder. The video signal (looking like flickering stripes) gets decoded by the PCM-1630 unit, outputting 16bit/44.1kHz digital audio.
Thanks to Ruud of DVS in Almere for taking care of these legends. Happy Wout here! 😺👍
