Happy Heavenly Birthday, John Lennon

John Lennon (John Winston Lennon) (October 9, 1940 – December 8, 1980) was still a teenager when he formed The Quarrymen in Liverpool, never knowing that the group would eventually evolve into the most influential band of its era. With Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Lennon became part of The Beatles and helped take rock music through an astonishing transformation during the 1960s.

The Lennon-McCartney partnership produced an enormous catalogue, but Lennon's individual musical personality was always recognizable. You've Got to Hide Your Love Away, In My Life, Tomorrow Never Knows, Strawberry Fields Forever, I Am the Walrus, Revolution, Across the Universe and Come Together traced his movement from direct rock ’n’ roll toward increasingly introspective and experimental songwriting.

When The Beatles ended, Lennon didn't attempt to recreate them. His solo work could be brutally personal, politically confrontational or remarkably tender. Instant Karma!, Mother, Imagine, Jealous Guy, Mind Games and Woman became classics in their own right, while his five-year retreat from the music business showed how dramatically his priorities had changed.

His return with Double Fantasy in 1980 suggested another creative chapter was beginning. Instead, Lennon was murdered just weeks after the album's release. He was 40. His life was terribly short, but the music he created during it became part of the permanent language of rock.
