’scape #2 is out! This special, unique issue of ’scape is entirely devoted to darkness. It is an ode to darkness, and covers how lighting design is increasingly inspired by the need for and the beauty of darkness. Exploring the natural features of our nocturnal ecosystem and using artificial lighting design to strengthen and support nightly, environmental needs, the designers and projects in this issue show new ways in which light design may respond to the far reaching consequences of light pollution and the decrease in biodiversity. They take a healthy, sustainable planet for both humans and non-humans as their central point of focus.

Amongst others covered in this issue:

/ fascinating photos of clear night skies in Stargazing by Bettymaya Foott & Anne Morley

/ introduction: an overview of qualities, problems and perspectives … Wishing for the stars

/ portraits and projects by lighting designers Roger Narboni of Concepto, Perry Maas of Strootman Landscape architects and Pernille Bech-Larsen of SLA

/ essay: Damaging the ecosystem

/ daily practice with designers Harro de Jong of Buro Harro, Onnie Tjia of the municipality of Rotterdam, Barbara Greene, Ellen de Vries of Het LuxLab, Yves Farion of lighting company Selux and DarkSky advocate Kyra Xavia

/ innovative ways to approach lighting design: designing with moonlight, using big data to analyse movement through the city at night and designing with night blooming plants

/ and more …

Last week, the day after the storm, we were lucky enough to stroll on the Marker Wadden. Five new islands created in the Markermeer lake, designed by Vista (landscape), Palmbout (Palmbout) and Ziegler Branderhorst (architecture). We had a lovely day with insane skies and what a special place. Beforehand we looked at the photos in the book Landscape Architecture Europe #6 and then on the Marker Wadden stunned by the green reality of today! What a world of difference and how powerful nature is.

Once in a while, you come across a story that stays with you, that excites you, that has potential and that you hope the world will act upon. Such is the story of designer, environmentalist, academic and author Julia Watson. She is part of the new 'scape cahier with photos from her beautiful book Lo-TEK / Design by radical indigenism. We link to a podcast with her fascinating stories on knowledge of indigenous people. To reach their citrus crop on the many islets, the Khasis in north-east India use ingeniously built bridges of living plants and trees. Even in times of monsoon rains, these organically moving bridges allow for access. Or the Uros, with their floating islands on Lake Titicaca in the Andes, who live in ultimate symbiosis with seabirds. In summer, they watch to see if these birds nest on the waterfront. If they nest higher, they know the water will rise and have to consider how to build their islands. Watson: ‘Why not use all this knowledge of different climate-resilient infrastructures to combat this crisis we know is on the horizon?’

Another stunning project in the new ‘scape cahier is the surroundings of the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne by Beril Serbes Architects. The Selimiye Mosque is a significant example of Ottoman architecture and listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The aim was to restore the relationship of the Mosque and its surroundings and the rest of the city. The site’s historical heritage and history become knowable again for today’s generation. ‘And all this with a refined design language and materialization appropriate for a contemporary urban environment.’

In Copenhagen, the Bispebjerg Cemetery has given a piece of land to the neighbourhood by moving part of the surrounding wall inwards. It’s one of the projects in the new ‘scape Cahier. The designers of VEGA landskab have created a pleasant green outdoor space at the edge, including hearth-inspired lighting by Lightscapes. Even more special is that this lighting design was not only considering humans, but also took other living creatures into account: the light intensity can be adjusted according to the time of day, but also according to the season, if there are migrating birds. Light pollution is an important and essential topic that we intend to build on in the thick summer issue of ‘scape.

Ruralisms - The productive landscapes of the Argentine Pampas and the US Midwest a photoessay by Pablo Gerson in ‘scape #19. He aspires to register productive landscapes so as to articulate new perceptions and relationships between distant yet remarkably similar territories. His photographs of the agricultural landscapes of the Argentine Pampas and the US Midwest emphasize the homogeneity that characterizes the construction of territory in both regions. They intend to expose the generic, the neutral, and even the anodyne, countering the dramatization that is customary in the typical modes of representation of these landscapes. The photos by Gerson express a certain artificiality - even a strangeness - via the breakdown of constituent elements that define them.

In scape #19 a new hot spot for The Hamaren Activity Park in Norway. Ready for a visit this summer. Constructed height was used at Fyresdal in Norway; not something you would expect in this mountainous country. However, Effekt’s designers had another reason for constructing an elevated boardwalk: namely, to respect the existing biotopes and nature at ground level. An unusual one-kilometre walk through the forest, among the treetops, leads you to a spectacular terminus. A circular viewpoint overlooking the lake and its surroundings. A breathtaking view.

In scape #19 you will find the amazing journey reportage by Pareto. The ‘Ingenious Landscapes’ project is an immersive investigation into the ingenuity of exceptional agricultural territories. It is a self-supported project by Héloïse Bouju and Simon Gabillard, the two landscape designers of the French office Pareto. An important ‘medium’ in their journey are their field notebooks. ‘scape found them stunning. Their insights and reflections are precise and poetic, drawn and written with care and craftmanship. Not to be missed.

One of the projects in the new issue #19 of scape magazine is the Lake Tyrrell project by Australian landscape architecture firm Thomson Hay. It is, above all, about accessibility. After a local posted a picture of the unusual salt lake on Chinese social media, the village and lake were overrun by tourists, causing misery. The designers used paths and boardwalks to ensure that tourists – without trampling vegetation and damaging the fragile foreshore – can walk to a cleverly designed platform. Arriving at this circular jetty, they can enjoy the view in all directions and even step onto the salt flats at the lower front of the jetty to take a spectacular photo. A dream view.

One of the projects within the new issue #19 of ‘scape magazine is the Palamós Coastal Walk by Estudi Martí Franch (EMF) & Ardévol Associats. It is one of the sections of the camí de ronda, a pedestrian route along the 43 kilometre long coastline that links the town of Palamós and Castell beach. Author Narcis Sastre comments in his review of the project: ‘On an autumn morning, the sunlight reflects on a Mediterranean Sea that turns from metallic grey to blue with the passing of the time, contrasting with the rocks, the small buildings belonging to fishermen, and the omnipresent pines’. The design improved traffic conditions and added native vegetation, but also made impassable points accessible. Along almost the entire route you are treated to views of the Mediterranean Sea. A never-ending view. Want to see and read more about this amazing project… it’s in issue #19. Https://www.scapemagazine.com/scape19
