Eastern Rebellion – 50th Anniversary

Timeless Records celebrates the 50th anniversary of Eastern Rebellion’s groundbreaking self-titled debut—an album that helped define modern straight-ahead jazz. Recorded in New York on December 10, 1975, the session brought together Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins, whose chemistry and virtuosity produced one of the most revered jazz records of the 1970s.
Featuring Walton’s now-classic composition “Bolivia,” Coleman’s “5/4 Thing,” and Jones’ “Bittersweet”—the album combined sophistication, swing, and fearless improvisation. Jazz critic Scott Yanow praised its inspired performances, calling it “a gem.”

Eastern Rebellion was also the first release on Timeless Records. Founder Wim Wigt recalls the financial risk of producing the session, noting that the album—and especially “Bolivia”—went on to become a lasting success.

“This was my first recording session for myself. I barely had the money to pay the studio, the musicians, or even for my trip to the USA. On the way back, with the master tapes under my arm—somewhere either at Reykjavik or Luxembourg airport—I wondered how I would ever earn this money back. As it still sells every day, you can imagine how unrealistic my thinking was. Especially the hit song ‘Bolivia,’ which, along with this album, has gone down in jazz history as a highlight. I thank the musicians for their tremendous effort in making this an excellent recording.”

The group continued with three more albums featuring changing horn lineups, including Bob Berg, Curtis Fuller, David Williams and Alfredo “Chocolate” Armenteros. Today, Eastern Rebellion remains a touchstone of modern jazz, still captivating listeners and influencing generations.

Stay tuned for special 50th-anniversary releases from Timeless Records in the upcoming year. Eastern Rebellion recordings are available on CD, vinyl, and all digital platforms.

On October 30–31, 1970 — exactly 55 years ago — the Dutch free jazz ensemble Association P.C. recorded their groundbreaking debut album, Earwax.

The sessions took place in Wageningen, the Netherlands, and was produced by jazz pioneer Wim Wigt, founder of Timeless Records, Earwax marked a bold fusion of free jazz and jazz-rock, capturing an adventurous, boundary-pushing sound led by drummer Pierre Courbois.
(Wim and Pierre are both seen on pic nr. 2)

The line-up featured guitarist Toto Blanke, bassists Siggi Busch and Peter Krijnen, and keyboardist Jasper van ’t Hof on electric piano. Together, Courbois, Blanke, and van ’t Hof became recognized as early innovators who helped shape both the European jazz-rock movement and the emerging German Krautrock scene.

“The best part of Earwax,” Courbois recalls, “is that it’s still considered the ultimate example of Krautrock in Germany — even though at the time, not a single member of Association P.C. knew what that was!
I still get questions almost daily about the recording — especially about the technical equipment we used. Believe me, we had almost nothing! Fender pianos weren’t yet available in the Netherlands, so Jasper played a Hohner Pianet instead. Effects gear was practically non-existent, and everything ran on batteries. I used a simple bebop drum kit with K. Zildjian cymbals.

The recording itself was just as straightforward: done in a living room, on a simple tape recorder placed on the kitchen counter between the coffee makers. The atmosphere was fantastic — full of laughter, howling, and screaming on both days. We had no idea we were creating something revolutionary. It was simply great fun! After 55 years, this re-release feels wonderful.”

The 55th anniversary edition of Earwax is now available on vinyl and digital platforms. The release includes six tracks and comes in a gatefold sleeve featuring detailed liner notes about the musicians and the making of the album. Copies are limited — so check your local record store while they last!

The new compilation Great Moments With… showcases the remarkable moments of Chet Baker's career, featuring both his vocals and trumpet work. It spans his final five and a half years, during which he collaborated closely with the Wim Wigt agency in the Netherlands.

The album includes a mix of bebop and ballads, along with the previously unreleased bonus track “But Not For Me”. During this period, Baker benefited from the agency’s management, leading to fewer missed performances and increased fame. His relationship with Wigt and his team, including his girlfriend Diane Vavra, key figures like tour manager Peter Huijts and record engineer Max Bolleman, significantly enhanced his career. The double album traces his journey with Wigt, beginning with the opening track “Ray’s Ideas”, and the ballad “Everything Happens To Me” and concludes with the previously unreleased track “But Not From Me”. The album highlights his work with European musicians and features recordings from various sessions, including performances with Dexter Gordon’s rhythm section, his own trio, and a rare live recording from Zagreb. The Great Moments With LP… not only celebrates Baker’s legacy but continues to inspire and resonate with new generations.

Great Moments With…is now available in stores as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on white coloured vinyl. The 2LP includes new liner notes by Jeroen de Valk and is housed in heavy cardboard linnen laminated gatefold sleeve.

The previously unreleased single "But Not From Me" is now also available on all digital platforms.

We are pleased to announce 'Swing Street' the latest album by the Eric Ineke JazzXpress. A tribute to the great Cannonball Adderley 1960-62 repertoire.

Throughout the 1960s, Adderley led one of the most popular groups in hard bop jazz. On Swing Street, drummer Eric Ineke and his quintet explore ten songs recorded by Adderley with his groups. Ineke, who was born and raised in the Netherlands, has been a major jazz drummer in Europe since the late 1960s. In addition to leading his own groups and working with top Europeans, he has recorded and performed with many American greats in Europe including Ben Webster, Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, George Coleman, Chet Baker, Jimmy Raney, Al Cohn, Barry Harris, Eric Alexander and David Liebman. Ineke recorded on Timeless with such notables as pianist Rein de Graaf, Al Cohn, Dave Pike, David “Fathead” Newman, and Ronnie Cuber, although Swing Street is his debut for Timeless as a leader. To bring back the sound of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet, Ineke utilized four masterful musicians.

Dutch alto-saxophonist Tineke Postma has led nine albums of her own since 2003. Among those who participated in her projects have been Geri Allen, Teri Lyne Carrington, Ralph Alessi, and Kris Davis. Trumpeter Nico Schepers, who is from Belgium, has worked with several large orchestras including the Brussels Jazz Orchestra as has the up-and-coming tenor-saxophonist Sjoerd Dijkhuizen. Pianist Rob van Bavel has appeared on over 200 albums and worked with Woody Shaw, Randy Brecker and Johnny Griffin. Bassist Marius Beets led a group with his brother pianist Peter Beets in the 1990s, worked with the Houdinis, recorded with Doug Webb and Dave Liebman, and was on several earlier albums with the Eric Ineke Jazzxpress including sets featuring Liebman, Deborah Brown and Frank Morgan.

The album will be presented tomorrow, November 3rd, during the band's performance at the TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht (NL), and is now available on all streaming platforms and on CD.

In 1983, the jazz legends Cedar Walton, Ron Carter and Jack DeJohnette made their one and only recording as a trio at Vanguard Studios, NYC. The record would be called The All American Trio, which would eventually released in 1986 on Limetree Records (a sister label of Timeless Records).

Cedar Walton was one of the most influential hard bop pianists and became well known as the pianist with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He would become particularly renowned for his association with the jazz collectives Eastern Rebellion and The Timeless All Stars. The multiple Grammy Award winning bassist Ron Carter and drummer Jack DeJohnette both gained fame early in their careers for their associations with two different Miles Davis groups. They would appear separately on numerous Timeless recordings, however together again with Cedar Walton on the album 'This Is For You, John' alongside Benny Golson and Pharaoh Sanders.

We're pleased to announce the reissue of 'Cedar Walton / Ron Carter / Jack DeJohnette' on 180 grams audiophile vinyl, which will worldwide available in stores on September 6th, 2024. The album features the songs 'Iron Clad', 'Blue Heart', 'All The Things You Are' a.o. It contains newly written liner-notes by jazz journalist/historian Scott Yanow.
