⭐️10 Days of Glocality⭐️

🌍 As we approach Glocality’s 10th anniversary, we are proud to feature Daniel Guigui, who served as Managing Editor from February 2016 to June 2017. ✨

Daniel vividly recalls managing his first article, authored by a fellow student. With meticulous attention to detail, ensuring ethical compliance and academic rigour, he guided the piece through every stage of publication. This hands-on experience offered him early and invaluable insights into the world of scholarly publishing.

Today, Daniel is completing his Ph.D. at University College Dublin’s School of Sociology. His doctoral research, "Shared Spaces, Shared Stories: Autobiographical Narratives of Dublin- and Munich-Based Hosts of Ukrainian Refugees," supervised by Dr. Marta Eichsteller, critically examines the interplay between material constraints and cosmopolitan solidarities through the lens of biographical narratives, offering profound insights into human resilience and interconnectedness.

In addition to his doctoral research, Daniel has contributed to various academic projects, served as a module tutor and guest lecturer, and currently holds the role of Membership Secretary for the Sociological Association of Ireland. These experiences continue to shape his aspiration towards an academic career, including roles in lecturing and mentoring the next generation of scholars.

🌍 World Refugee Day | June 20 | Solidarity with Refugees 🌍

Today, on World Refugee Day, Glocality Journal amplifies the stories of millions who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict or persecution to find safety for themselves and their families.

We are proud to spotlight two powerful student-led research articles that critically examine the refugee experience in Greece:

🔹 "Border Pushbacks in Greece: Human Rights Violations and Psychological Impacts" by Simona Nikolaeva (2024).

This article explores the psychological impacts of border pushbacks on refugees and asylum seekers in Greece, analysing the consequences of human rights violations and the lack of adequate mental health support for people on the move. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/glo.79

🔹 “Now I Do Not Eat, it is Just For My Children”: Mapping Food Access Disruption Among Refugees and Migrants in Athens, Greece by Leona Klein (2024).

This study identifies 20 factors underlying food access disruption and eight key unmet needs which should be priorities for interventions, highlighting structural barriers and differences within the heterogeneous group of refugees and migrants in Athens. DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/glo.79

These works reflect our commitment to elevating undergraduate research that drives awareness and action on pressing global issues.

🌍 Celebrating 10 Years of Glocality Journal 🎉

Glocality began as a student project rooted in a simple yet powerful belief: that undergraduate research deserves a wider audience. From that vision, a high-quality academic journal was born, dedicated to showcasing undergraduate research and giving students a platform to share their insights with the world. 🌍

As we mark our anniversary, we are proud to spotlight one of the student pioneers who helped turn that vision into reality: ✨ Julia Felicitas Michel ✨

Julia played a key role in the journal's founding phase, starting with the original student project in 2014 to its launch in 2015. She served as Managing Editor until 2016, laying the foundation for what Glocality Journal has become today.

Fun fact: Julia designed the logo!

Since graduating from the Global Project and Change Management | Windesheim Honours College, Julia has built a career as a Project Manager and Consultant in organisational development, drawing on agile methods and systemic thinking, and a deep commitment to personal, organisational, and societal transformation. Most recently, she completed a one-year training in Systemic Coaching and Change Management, and is now preparing to launch her own systemic coaching practice.

We are proud to celebrate Julia’s journey and the role she played in Glocality’s story. 💡📚

🌍✨ Celebrating 10 Years of Glocality Journal ✨🌍

This year marks a decade of showcasing impactful undergraduate research through Journal, and we are celebrating by highlighting some of the incredible individuals who have shaped our journey.

Today, we are proud to feature Léa Mari Jebali, a graduate of Global Project and Change Management | Honours College.

Léa played a pivotal role in Glocality’s relaunch during the autumn semester of 2019. She was the first to respond to the call for a new Managing Editor and brought great energy and dedication to the role. She continued to serve as Managing Editor until her graduation in 2022, working alongside a brilliant team of peers.

Léa is currently pursuing a Master’s in Socio-Ecological Economics and Policy (MSc) at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU Vienna), with a focus on the intersection of migration and labour policies. Her thesis explores how qualification programmes shape the inclusion of migrants in EU labour markets, a timely and important topic. Alongside her studies, she is gaining experience in policy research, particularly in the fields of social justice and inclusive development.

Read what Léa has to say about her experience with Glocality. ➡️

Stay tuned as we continue celebrating #10 years of undergraduate research, global perspectives, and student-led editorial excellence! 💫

🌍 May 28 | World Menstrual Hygiene Day: Together for a period-friendly world

Today, we spotlight an important contribution to menstrual health research: “Enhancing the Menstrual Experience of Menstruating Adolescents in Mashonaland Central, Zimbabwe: A Qualitative Study” by Jente Witte, published in . Jente is a graduate of Global Project and Change Management (GPCM) | Honours College.

🩸 This study dives deep into the real, lived experiences of at-risk menstruating adolescents in rural Zimbabwe, revealing key insights around:
• Menstrual knowledge and education
• Economic and physical barriers to hygiene
• The role of community and confidence in shaping health outcomes

What stands out is the study’s call to action: include the entire ecosystem, from adolescents and caregivers to communities, in menstrual health solutions. The research advocates for bottom-up, locally-rooted approaches that respect culture, ensure choice in products, and provide fundamental water, sanitation, and privacy needs.

🩸 Read the full article here: DOI: https://doi.org/10.5334/glo.33

📢 May28 is also International Day of Action for Women’s Health. Let’s use to amplify the voices of menstruating adolescents everywhere -- because every period should be safe, supported, and stigma-free.
