Johan Halvorsen (1864-1935) was among the most prominent Norwegian musical figures of his day, not only as one of the leading composers of his generation but also as a violinist and conductor. His compositions develop the national romantic tradition of his friends Grieg and Svendsen, but his was a distinctive style marked by brilliant orchestration which in turn was inspired by the French romantic composers. The varied fruits of his career produced such scores as Fossegrimen, the neoclassical Suite Ancienne and his Symphonic Intermezzo from The King, a tone poem much indebted to the musical language of Liszt and Wagner.
Halvorsen wrote extensively for the stage, and his lifelong fascination with ‘exotic’ elements in music is evident in the ‘Dance Scene’ from the incidental music to Knut Hamsun’s Queen Tamara, a historical play set in the Caucasus.

"Eit Hus for Ditt Namn" was commissioned by Ørskog Sokneråd in 2023 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Ørskog Church (Norway). Lyricist Alf Kjetil Walgermo writes about the commission: I have a deep personal relationship with Ørskog church, grew up in the village and attended church a lot as a child and youth. When I wrote the text for the 150th anniversary of the church, I read a lot of local history. I was fascinated both by what I could find out about the building process, about the time around it - where Henrik Ibsen went through Sjøholt a few years before - and about the consecration service. I had a vision of a construction team from the village, led by a master builder from outside, who built the church to God's glory. I was also inspired by psalms and passages from the Bible that were used during the consecration. The text in the work is written for choir, soloist and narrator. During the first performance in Ørskog church in November 2023, I myself was present and performed the text reading part, together with Ørskog Brass, Skodje Kyrkjekor, soloist Hallvar Djupvik, organist Arne B. Varmedal and conductor Tom Gontier.

"Milestones" is a musical depiction of the rich history of Musikklaget Brage, a wind band based in Ålesund, Norway. Through the different movements, I have highlighted some important events in the ensembles history.

The composition opens with a brief yet majestic prelude, which then gives way to the mysterious introduction of the section titled "1907: Destination Christiania". This passage refers to the year the band was founded and the members’ bicycle journey to Christiania (now Oslo) to acquire their instruments.

A transition leads to "1934: March Towards Nordkapp", which features expressive solos for euphonium and tuba. In 1934, Musikklaget Brage is believed to have been the first marching band to perform a concert at North Cape. The march evolves into a waltz, incorporating brief quotations from the local Spjelkavik Song intertwined with original melodic material. An interlude follows, reintroducing the melody from the opening section in a transformed guise. This sets the stage for "1973-1990: The Golden Age". The chorale reminds us of the musical development that Musikklaget Brage went through during this period.

"Finalis: Futurum Vultus Serenum" is the title of the final section of this composition. Previously introduced themes are revisited and interwoven, building toward a dramatic turning point. A vibrant and rhythmically driven theme gradually emerges and is ultimately played in unison by the full ensemble, culminating in a powerful conclusion.

"Milestones" was commissioned by Musikklaget Brage with support from the "Norwegian Composers´ Fund".

The life and work of the French oceanographer, filmmaker and author Jacques-Yves Cousteau (1910-1997) served as a source of inspiration in composing "Les voyages du commandant Cousteau" (The Travels of Commander Cousteau) for tuba and organ. The use of tuba multiphonics, various percussion instruments and the full dynamic range of the organ, contributes to a musically truthful depiction of life beneath the ocean's surface.

The lively start of the work, "Calypso, nymphe de la mer" (Calypso, the Sea Nymph), tells the story of Calypso, Cousteau´s main expedition vessel for diving, filming and oceanographic research. "Le monde du silence" (The Silent World) serves as a contrast to the first movement in both style and atmosphere. The title of the movement refers to one of the first films directed by Cousteau, in which he uses underwater cinematography to show the ocean depths in color. The final movement, "Voyage au bout du monde" (Voyage to the Edge of the World), is a depiction of Cousteau´s four-month expedition through Antarctica. During this expedition, paleontologist and Calypso´s second in command Michel Laval died in a helicopter accident. "La mort de Michel Laval" (The Death of Michel Laval) expresses this tragic event.
