A Flydubai co-pilot accused of attacking the captain and attempting to seize control of an Israel-bound flight had previously been barred from flying in Oman over concerns about extremist views.

The pilot was later hired by Flydubai. During the September 30 flight, he allegedly attacked the captain with a cockpit axe as the aircraft made a sharp descent.

Passengers and crew managed to overpower him, and the plane landed safely in Saudi Arabia.

The investigation is ongoing.

The figure comes as the Channel crossing crisis continues, with 781 arrivals recorded on a single day this week.

The comparison has drawn criticism from opposition politicians, who argue that the government is failing to control Britain’s borders. The government, meanwhile, says small-boat crossings are down compared with previous years.
