CFP Beta: Strategic decisiveness and the scope of action in healthcare
In this special issue of BETA, we invite articles that contribute to knowledge about strategic decisiveness and the scope of action among leaders in the healthcare sector, with a particular focus on Norway and the Nordic countries. The healthcare sector is among the largest and most important sectors in Norway. It provides services that are crucial for people's lives and quality of life at all stages, accounting for between 12 and 13 percent of GDP in mainland Norway. Over 70 percent of these are public services, with the specialist health service (state) making up 38 percent and municipalities 32 percent. An aging population with an increasing degree of concurrent diseases (comorbidities), more and more expensive treatments available, and higher and often somewhat conflicting expectations from citizens and various stakeholders in society, contribute to growing demand. On the supply side, there are constraints due to the availability of qualified personnel and financial resources. New technology offers opportunities for better quality and greater efficiency but also drives up complexity, investment needs, and new competency requirements. There is a demand for innovation, willingness and ability to change, collaboration and co-creation, prioritization, efficiency, and improved working conditions. At the same time, many leaders in the healthcare sector experience their scope of action as limited and/or find it challenging to mobilize for strategic influence.
We invite studies from areas such as strategy, organisation, innovation and service development, coordination, change and leadership. Theoretical and empirical studies that are relevant for, and most preferably from, Norway and the Nordic countries are welcome. We are particularly interested in studies that include the introduction or utilization of technology, new forms of organising and collaboration, but are also open to other angles.
