Diamer Basha Dam – Latest Construction Progress Update
Take a closer look at the latest construction progress of the Diamer Basha Dam, one of Pakistan’s most ambitious water, energy, and infrastructure projects. This new video highlights the ongoing works at the site and showcases how this mega hydropower project is steadily taking shape.

Located on the Indus River in Gilgit-Baltistan, the Diamer Basha Dam is designed as a major multipurpose project with a planned installed capacity of 4,500 MW. Once completed, it will generate approximately 18 billion units of clean, renewable hydropower every year, making a substantial contribution to Pakistan’s long-term energy security.

Beyond power generation, the project will deliver major water‑storage and irrigation benefits. With a gross storage capacity of around 8.1 million acre-feet, the dam will enhance water availability and strengthen Pakistan’s resilience against seasonal fluctuations. It is also expected to support irrigation for 1.23 million acres of additional agricultural land, boosting food production and supporting rural livelihoods.

The scale of construction underway is enormous. From the massive dam structure and diversion tunnels to underground works, access roads, excavation zones, and associated infrastructure, Diamer Basha stands among the largest infrastructure projects currently under development in Pakistan. The dam will also help regulate Indus River flows and extend the life of downstream reservoirs by reducing sedimentation.

Diamer Basha Dam Project — Pakistan’s Mega Hydropower Development

The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is constructing the Diamer Basha Dam Project on the Indus River in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan.

At 272 meters high, the dam is being developed as the world’s tallest Roller-Compacted Concrete (RCC) dam.

Once completed, Diamer Basha Dam will:

Store approximately 8.1 million acre-feet (MAF) of water
Generate 4,500 MW of clean, green and affordable electricity
Produce around 18,000 GWh (18 billion kWh) of electricity annually
Improve Pakistan’s water storage capacity and support long-term water and energy security

300 MW Balakot Hydropower Project – Major Construction Milestone

The 300 MW Balakot Hydropower Project has achieved another important construction milestone.

On August 16, 2026, excavation and support works for the 2nd bench of the underground Main Powerhouse were successfully completed.

The underground powerhouse is approximately 125 m long, 40 m high and 20 m wide, making it one of the major underground structures of the project.

Completion of the 2nd bench excavation will improve construction conditions and pave the way for the next key activities, including crane beam concrete works and excavation of the third bench.

The project team is continuing to focus on construction quality, efficient resource allocation and accelerating progress toward the project’s targets.

A significant step forward for Pakistan’s hydropower development and clean energy future.

Mohmand Dam Project
Latest construction progress from the Mohmand Dam, one of Pakistan’s most vital water and energy infrastructure projects!
Located on River Swat in the Tribal District Mohmand, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the 213-meter-high dam is set to become the 5th highest Concrete-Faced Rockfill Dam (CFRD) in the world. With a storage capacity of 1.29 MAF, it will irrigate 18,233 acres of new land and enhance water supply to 160,000 acres of existing farmland.
The dam will generate 800 MW of clean hydropower, adding 2.86 billion units of affordable electricity to the national grid every year.
It will also help control floods in Peshawar, Charsadda, and Nowshera, and provide 300 million gallons of drinking water daily to Peshawar city.

Tarbela Dam Reaches Maximum Conservation Level | 5.58 MAF Water Available

Tarbela Reservoir has reached its maximum conservation level of 1,550 feet above mean sea level during the ongoing high-flow season.

The reservoir now holds approximately 5.58 million acre-feet (MAF) of live, usable water, providing a valuable water reserve for regulated releases to support Pakistan’s irrigation needs during the upcoming crop seasons.

The increased water availability will also support the efficient operation of Tarbela Hydel Power Station, helping increase the generation of clean, green, renewable and low-cost electricity for the National Grid.

Tarbela Dam continues to play a vital role in Pakistan’s water, energy and economic security.

Since its completion in 1974:
• 422 MAF of stored water has been released for the agriculture sector.
• More than 623 billion units of electricity have been generated and supplied to the National Grid.
• The project has provided estimated economic benefits of around US$460 billion to Pakistan.

Tarbela Dam remains one of Pakistan’s most important water and hydropower projects, supporting agriculture, energy production and sustainable economic development.

Preparatory meeting held in Islamabad for the EPC stage tariff of the 300 MW Balakot Hydropower Project.

The tariff hearing for Balakot HPP is scheduled for 4 August 2026 under the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This is another important milestone toward the development of one of Pakistan’s major renewable energy projects.

The 300 MW Balakot HPP will provide clean, reliable, and affordable electricity to the national grid while supporting sustainable energy development, reducing dependence on imported fuels, and creating economic opportunities for the region.
