FREDAG // ICRN: 14.00-15.00: Voices of Seyðisfjörður
Voices of Seyðisfjörður is a new radiowork produced by Michael Umney, Michael Holland and Robert Nikolajev during their time in the East of Iceland. Below, Michael Holland reflects on their process, and you can listen back here.
The recordings are from two primary resources - those made during the trip when the network considered how to respond to the landscape of Seyðisfjörður; and voices (spoken in Icelandic) from an archival project from Skaftfell Art Center recorded between 2011 and 2012. These recordings were harvested from a beautiful project that captured the voices of local residents, telling intriguing stories from their lives there. Not their whole lives, but more like moments they remember from Seyðisfjörður. We chose these specific stories, as they paint many different pictures of the town from different times. They show the impact of visitors to Seyðisfjörður and the marks they left on the town. The stories are humorous, as well as touching memories, helping to build a picture and an angle to help you imagine the beauty of the place. The beauty of the land and the people.
The initial recordings were made by Michael Umney and Michael Holland in a disused silo, and then Robert Nikolajev (IDA Radio) also got involved in the editing process, making some versions and interpretations of the music. Instruments and voice were performed by Michael Umney and processing was by Michael Holland and Robert Nikolajev. Everything was made within a few days in Seyðisfjörður Iceland.
Thank you to Celia Harrison, Director of Skaftfell Arts Center, for sharing the recordings and videos. Thank you to Árný Bergsdóttir, who was the project manager of 'Narrative Collection' and to Kári Gunnlaugsson, Bjarki Borgþórsson, Hanna Christel, Sigurkarlsdóttir and Kristján Loðmfjörð, who all collected the stories in 2011 - 2012.
