Джэрпэджэж / Jrpjej in Denmark! New vocalist and some new sounds!

05.–06.11.25: Closer To Final Descent presents Jrpjej (NC)

Jrpjej (Ored Recordings) plays post-traditional Circassian music that reimagines its roots while pushing against the boundaries of the canon. Relying solely on acoustic instruments – shichepshin, apapshin, percussion, accordion – the group crafts a sound that is unexpectedly dense and intense, evoking the weight and texture more often associated with metal or experimental electronic music.

At the core of Jrpjej is vocalist Svetlana Mamresh, a contemporary theatre actress with a background in opera and baroque singing. With Mamresh as their main voice, Jrpjej delves into the meeting points between Circassian traditional music, European classical traditions, fragmented Soviet-era folklore, and the nearly forgotten vocal and instrumental practices of the North Caucasus.

⚫ Djegu Session: Circassian & Abkhazian Music from London, https://bit.ly/DjeguSession

This new release sounds as remarkable as its title: it’s the music of the Abkhaz and Circassians of Türkiye, reimagined in the context of London.

Mustafa Unal grew up in a small village near Samsun, surrounded from an early age by the sounds of a diatonic Hohner accordion. His family, relatives, and neighbours would play music for any occasion: weddings, celebrations, or gatherings.

After moving to London, Mustafa deepened his focus on the instrument. He not only preserved the style of rural festivities — djegu — but also absorbed European techniques for playing the Hohner.

Mustafa Unal’s debut album is, first and foremost, extraordinary music that we can’t wait to share. But it’s also an opportunity to explore questions of identity, language, and culture.

In addition to audio recordings, we’re releasing a video playlist of a Djegu Session, filmed in Mustafa’s London apartment: https://bit.ly/Djegu_session

⚫️ Abkhazian & Circassian Music from Turkey, https://bit.ly/OredinTR

For Circassians, Abkhazians, and Abazins, May 21st is a day of mourning, marking the end of the Russo-Caucasian War in 1864, the loss of independence, and the mass expulsion from their historical homeland.

One of the visible results of the Russian-Caucasian War was an extensive Circassian diaspora around the world.

The diaspora, with its own context and struggles, has also given birth to unique intonations in music and culture in general. These contributions, born out of a need to preserve their heritage, are truly fascinating and worthy of appreciation.

The recordings on the album are part of the material we collected on a big expedition to Türkiye in 2017.

The Azar Ensemble was regarded as the last bastion of Abkhazian table singing. As is often the case, people were more focused on preserving the image of the last and most valuable bearers of tradition than on acquiring their knowledge and skills.

"70-Year-Old Youth" is a home ensemble of elders from Düzce. The ironic name not only accurately described the participants' age and enthusiasm but also the music played by the group — wedding music for games-dzhegu.

It is fundamentally important for us to release something every May 21st that speaks not only of mourning but more about hope.

The joy lies in the fact that there are people for whom these recordings are made. There are those for whom these songs can be sung.

⚫️ Älibiy Romanov — Yiraw: Nogay Heroic and Lyrical Songs: https://bit.ly/yiraw

The label's first Nogay release is a sad acknowledgment of how we constantly lag behind, fail to catch up with tradition, and timely support talented and irreplaceable individuals.

Alibiy Romanov was recorded as far back as 2015, but the release was postponed "for polishing" for years: we lacked expertise, context, comments, and something else. As a result, Alibiy tragically died in a car accident in 2021, never seeing the publishing.

Alibiy Romanov was born and raised in the village of Kunbatar in the Nogay district of Dagestan. His mother played the dombra, passing on to her son the passion and skill for native music. His biography is quite typical for the region: Alibiy tried to be both a guardian of the old style, preserving what he heard from elders, and worked in official ensembles, performing pop acts at celebrations Soviet style; he taught children to make dombras and play them.

The stories of significant musicians in the West may have accustomed us to the antagonism of the "underground - establishment." Yet, Romanov, like many guardians of tradition and artists of the North Caucasus, lived in both worlds simultaneously and did not experience any duality.

His life profoundly reflects on the role of a storyteller, akyn, and performer (yiraw) in modern Nogay culture.

Ored Recordings im Düsseldorf 🇩🇪

We are now based in Düsseldorf, Germany, on a somewhat regular basis. This doesn't mean that the label now specializes in techno and kraut rock. North Caucasian music remains our number one priority.

There is a large Circassian diaspora here and lots of opportunities to create and form (post)traditional acts. It's also easier now to collaborate, research, and give concerts.

Thank you for keeping in touch. We are open now to proposals, invitations, and networking in Europe!

„Ulyap Songs: Beyond Circassian Tradition” to wyjątkowy wgląd w tradycyjne pieśni śpiewaków i śpiewaczek z Czerkiewska, ale też pole do reinterpretacji tej muzyki przez współczesnych twórców, co pokazuje jak fascynująca jest muzyczna tradycja na peryferiach świata muzyki.

Ored Recordings: Folk Revival in the Western Caucasus
