Dag Knudsen - Xinã Bena Exhibition Launch 🍃 July 24th 17:00-20:00 ✨ Tad Galleri, Oslo
This Thursday sees the launch of new photography exhibition, Xinã Bena at . The opening will be marked by a visit from a delegation from the Huni Kuin tribe in Novo Segredo, including village leader Ixa Sabino and his family, as well as the founders of IGF, Rodrigo Moreiras and Mariana Carvalho. There will be traditional music, conversations and lectures - a unique opportunity to meet representatives of the indigenous population of the Amazon in Oslo.
About the Project
In January 2023, Dag traveled up the Jordão River in the Brazilian Amazon in collaboration with the non-profit organization , an NGO that works for indigenous rights and sustainable infrastructure in the villages. Through an audience with Huni Kuin leaders, Knudsen was given unique access to document daily life in four isolated villages, including Novo Segredo, a three-day journey by boat from the nearest civilization. The images, which were published in Vogue amongst others, depict a rare close-up portrait of culture, community and spirituality in the rainforest.
In collaboration with IGF, Knudsen launched a crowdfunding campaign that raised 320,000 NOK for drilling a freshwater well in Novo Segredo, which was completed in the spring of 2025. Two years later, he returned to follow up on the project and map new needs, including a solar-powered electrical plant for sustainable power supply in Novo Segredo.
The exhibition consists of 36 photographs and profits from the sales of the images go entirely to financing solar panels in Novo Segredo. “Xinã Bena” means “cultural exchange” in the Huni Kuin language Hatcha Kuin and the exhibition is a powerful expression of cooperation, respect and cultural exchange.
Ceremonial cocoa will be served at the opening. The cocoa offered comes from AYNI, an initiative that collaborates with indigenous peoples in the Peruvian Amazon to grow and distribute 100% pure, indigenously grown and aromatic cocoa. 🤎
All are welcome to join, support and celebrate this wonderful project.
