Bulinda Village鈥檚 Community Action for Better Roads

Public accountability reporting by Andrew Sebunya.

In the Namutumba region of Kamuli District, eastern Uganda, poor road conditions are a major barrier to social services and economic progress. But in Bulinda village, with support from Twaweza Uganda, residents are taking matters into their own hands. Through a grassroots self-help initiative, community members have come together to clear drainage systems, fill potholes, and grade the roads themselves. This inspiring story of resilience and community action highlights how local efforts, with some support and good leadership, can tackle critical infrastructure challenges.

Edible insects: ecologically sustainable alternative for human food
Insects are a highly nutritious source of protein: an example is cricket powder, which can contain between 50% and 70% protein and has vitamins such as B12 and minerals such as iron and magnesium. In addition, it can be an alternative to contribute to food security.
At an environmental level, their benefits are immense: this production system requires less water, food and space, which is why it represents a lower ecological impact compared to other food production, such as livestock, which emits more than 13% greenhouse emissions in Costa Rica.
There are other challenges to overcome, such as in Costa Rican culture there is a certain repulsion towards edible insects. However, this industry can generate more than $7 billion in 2030. This video will explain the rise and operation of the edible insect industry in Costa Rica and their environmental benefits.

Did you know that improper disposal of medications can harm both our environment and public health? In Costa Rica, thousands of unused or expired medications end up in rivers and soil, affecting ecosystems and organisms that were never meant to interact with them.
Our latest report delves into the existing solutions for safe disposal and the importance of raising environmental awareness across all sectors. From government initiatives to community engagement, we explore how responsible medication disposal can protect Costa Rica's natural resources and public well-being for future generations.

The overpopulation of crocodiles in Costa Rica: various perspectives on the management of this species. We discuss the public perception that there is an overpopulation of crocodiles, despite recent studies from SINAC indicating that the density of crocodiles is relatively low.
The debate revolves around the balance between conservation and environmental management. Hunting may not be an effective solution due to the complexity of the species' behavior.
Ultimately, while there are places where crocodiles should not be, it is essential that we understand the behavior of the species and manage their presence appropriately.

Each year, households in Costa Rica discard approximately 91 kilograms of food per capita, a practice that imposes a significant environmental burden. According to the Food Waste Index by the United Nations Environment Programme, food waste is responsible for 8% to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions annually. This video examines the implications of food waste on ecosystems, featuring insights from a costarrican researcher and perspectives from university students, highlighting the critical role of reducing food waste in safeguarding our environment.
