The Viking Rollo (c. 846 – c. 930 AD), the first Duke of Normandy, was according to the sagas so big that no horse could carry him, hence the nickname “Gange Rolv”, meaning Walking Rolv / Rollo. (Illustration: © Stian Dahlslett) Editor’s Note: The article was first published on normandescendants.com. The text is edited by ThorNews. A genetic study conducted by scientists from the University of Leicester (UK) and the University of Caen Normandy (France), have determined that some of today’s Normans probably are Viking descendants. A herd of Icelandic horses, probably very similar to the original Viking horses brought from Western Norway around the year 900 AD. (Photo: Knut Houge / hest.no) In one of the Icelanders' sagas, Hrafnkel’s saga Freysgoða, we learn how important the horse Freyfaxi was to chieftain Hrafnkel: He axes his own shepherd Einar and keeps his promise that he will kill anyone who rides his horse without permission. Early 1890's: Famous playwright Henrik Ibsen photographed by Carl M. Størmer "I was a young 19 year-old student at the time and had gotten hold of a funny detective camera." This is how Carl M. Størmer describes his new and amusing hobby in the St. Hallvard Journal from 1942. In his portfolio we find photographs of the most famous Norwegian, playwright Henrik Ibsen as he strutted down Karl Johan’s street in Oslo - most likely unaware of the shooting. [ 514 more words ]

This runic inscription from Bergen is quite long and the author must have had a lot of "erotic energy" when he carved these runes into the 33 centimeter-long wooden stick: "I love that man's wife so high that fire feels cold! And I am that woman's lover". (Photo: Svein Skare, University Museum of Bergen / Photomontage: ThorNews) There have so far been found about 700 runic inscriptions dating back to the 14th century in the Bryggen area in Bergen, Western Norway. The burial mound on the Leka island containing King Herlaug and eleven of his men originally was about 12.5 meters (41 ft) high with a diameter of more than 70 meters (230 ft). It is one of the largest Viking graves discovered in Norway - and the largest containing people. (Photo: ThorNews) The year is 871 AD, and King Herlaug of the Namdalen district in Central Norway fulfills his last wish: instead of surrendering to King Harald Fairhair, he and eleven of his men choose to be buried alive inside a large burial mound on the island of Leka. "God Norsk Jul! - "Happy Norwegian Christmas!" (Artist: Frank Wathne, produced 1946) In the good old days, a respected Norwegian occupation was to be a Christmas card artist. Absolutely everyone who could write sent a nice card to family and friends, and millions ended up in mailboxes all across the country. Unfortunately times have changed, and today only a few send Christmas cards by regular mail. [ 123 more words ]
